About Scalloway Hotel

The Scalloway Hotel sits on Main Street in Scalloway, the town that served as Shetland's capital before Lerwick took over the role, and its position on the waterfront gives many of the rooms a direct outlook over the harbour. The Cross family runs the hotel personally, overseeing everything from renovations to day-to-day hospitality, and the result is a smaller, more local feel than the larger hotels in Lerwick seven miles away.

Guest rooms are comfortable rather than showy, with sea views a particular draw in the front-facing rooms, and the hotel covers everything from romantic breaks to family holidays and business trips. The restaurant and bar/lounge form the social centre of the building, serving food to both residents and locals, which keeps the atmosphere lively rather than purely geared to passing tourists.

Scalloway itself rewards a stay with its own castle, built in 1600, and a museum telling the story of the town's role in the wartime Shetland Bus operation, which ferried resistance fighters and supplies to and from occupied Norway. The short drive to Lerwick makes the hotel a genuine alternative base for exploring the whole of the Shetland mainland, usually at a lower rate than the capital's own hotels.

I’m staying over at the Scalloway hotel. It is great. The foood is like old fashioned home cooking. Great portions and great taste. I almost forgot to take a photo I was enjoying so much 😅

Pleasant staff & bar. No real ale (cask or bottle-conditioned) nor any Shetland (Lerwick Brewery) craft beers, but some Orkney beers in fridge which were good.

Lovely little hotel right on the harbour. Evening meal was delicious. The waitresses were great, friendly and helpful. Room clean and comfortable. Stayed in the four poster bedroom with great views. Breakfast was a huge choice cooked perfectly. Can not fault my stay Everyone was friendly and helpful. The hotel has plenty of parking in immediately outside. Definitely would go back next time I am in Shetlands.

The staff working here seem to do their best but there is a lack of managerial oversight to this hotel. The meals were good on the whole, although on one occasion fish was not cooked. This was quickly dealt with to be fair and we had a free drink and dessert to compensate. The bed was very firm and shower poor. Bathroom could have done with a good clean. Shame, with a bit more attention to detail it could be souch better.
