Built around 1581 as a fortified stronghold against Border Reivers, Braidwood Castle (also known as Hallbar Tower) still stands in the Clyde Valley near Carluke. This four-storey tower has been restored with attention to historical detail, retaining period features including the great hall with its painted ceiling. The exterior shows crow-step gables characteristic of the era. Access to the property involves one step at the entrance, but the internal stairs are steep and narrow—something to consider when booking.
The castle sleeps 5 across three bedrooms: a double on the top floor with ensuite, and two singles on the second floor alongside a bathroom with bath and shower. The ground floor contains the kitchen and dining space, equipped for cooking and eating in, plus a separate toilet. A woodburner in the great hall serves as a feature rather than the main heating. The top-floor bedroom is reached via a short external walkway. Electricity, heating, bed linen and towels are included, along with logs for the stove. Wi-Fi, parking for two cars and an enclosed garden are available; the grounds extend to 1½ acres with lawned areas and an orchard (shared with a neighbouring cottage). A pub lies within a mile. The property does not permit smoking. One dog is welcome.
The tower suits those drawn to genuine historic buildings and willing to navigate its architectural quirks. It is not wheelchair-accessible and would challenge anyone preferring level access or lift travel.

Fantastic castle kept just as it should be, uneven stairs all different shapes and sizes. All the rooms are unique over 4 floors. Amazing views from the top! Holiday let 7 night stay. A lovely food hamper left for us to enjoy. In all a perfect and unique place to stay!

Stayed for the week and thoroughly enjoyed it. Took our 5year old springer who coped well with the stairs, larger gs types or smaller like toy dogs may struggle. We took a 22kg case and instantly regretted it, next time we'll take 2 cabin bags, the stairs (all 67) different heights and widths. Amazing castle, awesome history and stunning views, most definitely going back. Everything you could need is there and an amazing welcome hamper that we scoffed. Amazing place, absolutely loved it. The stairs are a challenge though & would not recommend it for people who have problems with mobility.
