About The St Ives Bay Hotel
Breakfast, a bar and a restaurant with kids' meals and packed lunches on request give The St Ives Bay Hotel a solid base for a Cornish stay, with outdoor seating and a snack bar for lighter moments and room service for those who'd rather not move. It's a straightforward setup, but a dependable one, on The Terrace in St Ives.
Rooms come with en-suite bathrooms, drinks and the option of family or accessible layouts, and many look out over the sea, which is the main draw here. That said, upkeep is inconsistent, and some rooms have been reported as tired or not as thoroughly cleaned as they should be, so it's worth setting expectations accordingly. Staff are consistently described as friendly and helpful, and the hotel is generally felt to offer good value for what's included.
Beyond the hotel, the surrounding area caters to most interests, with golf, fishing, horse riding, cycling routes, watersports and walking trails all within reach, alongside nearby pubs, restaurants and entertainment. Free WiFi, luggage storage, meeting rooms and pet-friendly policies round out the practical offering, making it a workable choice for exploring St Ives and the wider Cornish coast.
What guests say
Lovely view of the beach from the Hotel and most staff were helpful and pleasant. However there are a lot of steps up to hotel, plus we were on the second floor so had 2 more flights of stairs to climb. The carpets are thread bear and very badly stained everywhere. It smells of damp and all the paintwork needs redoing. The shower was a trickle and bits ie toilet roll holder and shelf in the bathroom fell off. The view from our window was lovely and the room was nicely cleaned, but for the house keeping staff, this must feel like trying to polish a turd. Its very very dated and feels sad and unloved. We went to breakfast at 8.30. Breakfast is 7.30 to 9.30. A coach party had been earlier and there was very little food left from the buffet and even when we asked for bits to be topped up, this slowly happened or not at all. There is some parking which in that area is a bonus, but its limited.

Out of 6 weeks tripping around Malaysia, UK, Sri Lanka and Bali, this hotel provided the worst, most disappointing stay of our whole trip. It was also more expensive, so we expected it, as we saw in the images, to be very nice. Unfortunately when we arrived, we were dumped into a small room, facing a wall of windows which viewed into our room which meant curtains had to be drawn for privacy as there were no sheers. We know UK doesn't have airconditioning but we had to ask for a fan; the temperature was in the thirties. Now, we are in our very late 60s. I had to lug both of our suitcases by myself up 4 flights of stairs and down again when we left. To top it off, the floor wasn't exactly in the best condition either in the hallways, creaking away underfoot. Didn't feel as safe as it should. There was no elevator available to use. They said that was in the other half of the building that had been renovated. There is no connection between the 2... 1 receptionist was helpful in getting to see if there was any availability in the new part. The other was quite dismissive. But the place was fully booked and we totally lucked out The room was extremely run down, very hot and also quite noisy. The bathroom was full of mould and the bath slippery for unsteady legs. Paint was peeling off the wall and bubbling under the window. Carpet was stained and threadbare next to the bed. The room was really inferior and being charged the same price as for the renovated side is just unethical and totally misleading. A few weeks later we find out th get are shutting that section down for renovations; I think in September. Shame on you St Ives Bay hotel. You should be giving us a refund

The hotel is facing Porthminster beach and you need just 5 minutes to walk to the beach. Very good place for children. It is not in the heart of the town but it’s only takes 15 minutes to walk to the harbor since this is a small place. The room seems to be decorated recently and looks clean, with enough plugins on the wall. If you windows are facing the beach, you will have a wonderful sea view, and enjoy the sunrise over the sea. But it also means a lot of noises in the daytime as it is by the roadside. The services are limited (especially for the housekeeping and breakfast), the facilities are old, the floor creaks, as many similar peers. What more could you expect with the room rate is relatively cheap?

After all the awful reviews I booked here thinking "it's only one night and it's a good price". I have to say my stay gas been great! An upgrade to a small double with sea view - room 32 (only an extra £12) was worth it. A modest but very comfortable room with cracking views and in nice order. Bathroom clean and all linen good. Bed very comfortable and a little balcony overlooking Porthminster beach. Breakfast was actually very nice and a choice of hot food was served to the table. Reviews are fair about this hotel being past her best overall but the ground floor areas are very nice indeed having been upgraded. Staff at reception advised that the new owners (Saudi) have big plans to change the hotel and upgrade it to a luxury one with spa facilities. This will be relatively soon once the sister hotel in St Mawes completes June '26. This explains the upper floors being tired (ref other reviews). Make the most of this grand old lady as she is before you can't afford to stay here!

Other reviews mention the rooms can be poorly maintained and there can be a lack of proper cleaning.
