The best staycations near Manchester, from Peak District villages under an hour away to the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, the Lancashire and North Wales coast, and nearby historic cities.

Manchester is one of the best-placed cities in Britain for a weekend away. The Peak District starts on its doorstep, the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales are an easy drive north, and the coasts of Lancashire and North Wales are closer than many people realise. Here are the best staycations near Manchester, grouped by type.

The Peak District

The Peak District is the obvious choice, with parts of it under an hour from the city centre. Buxton is a Georgian spa town with an opera house and direct trains from Manchester Piccadilly. Bakewell is a market town on the River Wye, close to Chatsworth, and Matlock sits in a steep valley with walks up to the Heights of Abraham.

For walkers, the Hope Valley is the heart of the Dark Peak, with campsites around Castleton and Mam Tor above. Peak View Shepherd Huts near Glossop is a glamping option rated 4.9 from over 100 reviews. See our guide to the best campsites in the Peak District for more.

The Lake District

The Lake District is a drive of around two hours, and you can also get there by train, changing at Oxenholme for Windermere. Windermere and Ambleside are good bases for a first visit, with boat trips and lakeside walks, and Kendal is a handy stop on the way. Langdale Chase is a classic lakeside hotel if you want a treat.

The Yorkshire Dales

The Yorkshire Dales are easy to reach across the Pennines. Skipton is the gateway, with a castle and a busy market, and The Devonshire Arms at Bolton Abbey is a country hotel with a spa. Campers should read our guide to the best campsites in the Yorkshire Dales.

Closer to home, Clitheroe is a small market town at the edge of the Forest of Bowland, with its own castle.

The coast

The Lancashire coast is the nearest seaside to Manchester. Southport has a long pier and a Victorian shopping street, Lytham St Annes is quieter and more genteel, and Blackpool is still the classic seaside resort.

North Wales is also within reach. Llandudno is a Victorian resort with a pier and the Great Orme, and Conwy has one of Edward I's great castles. For mountains, Betws-y-Coed is the gateway to Snowdonia.

Cities and historic towns

Chester is about an hour away and has Roman and medieval walls, the Rows and a racecourse. Liverpool is closer still, with the Albert Dock and waterfront museums. York is an easy train ride across the Pennines, and Harrogate is a good spa town alternative.

In Cheshire, Knutsford is a small town next to Tatton Park, with a deer park and gardens, and Macclesfield is on the edge of the Peak District.

Planning your trip

Most of these places are reachable by train, but a car makes the Peak District, the Dales and the Lakes easier to explore. Avoid the M6 on Friday evenings if you can. For a quieter weekend, go midweek or outside school holidays.
