About Langdale Chase Hotel

Langdale Chase has stood on the eastern shore of Windermere since 1891, built as a private house and later run for decades as a hotel. It closed for a lengthy and careful restoration and reopened as a five-star property, keeping the carved oak staircase, stone fireplaces and mullioned windows while replacing almost everything behind them. The result is a building that still reads as a Victorian lakeside mansion but works as a modern hotel.

There are around thirty bedrooms and suites split between the main house, the coach house and a small number of garden rooms. The best face west across the water towards the Langdale Pikes, and several have balconies or bay window seats. Decoration is restrained and contemporary, with muted colours, good beds and generous bathrooms; some rooms in the older part of the house have retained original panelling and fireplaces. Dogs are accepted in designated rooms.

The restaurant occupies the former drawing room and looks out over the terraced lawns, with a menu built around Cumbrian meat, fish landed on the west coast and produce from local growers. There is a bar for lighter plates, and afternoon tea is served in the lounge or outside when the weather allows. Terraced gardens step down to a private jetty and boathouse, and the hotel can arrange trips on the lake.

The setting is the reason to come. The house sits on the road between Windermere and Ambleside, so both towns are within a few minutes' drive, and the ferry, the steamers and the walking country around Troutbeck are all close. It suits couples, small groups celebrating something, and anyone who wants a lake view from the bed rather than a short walk away.

Had a fantastic one stay at Langdale Chase as a special treat. Staff were brilliant, room was gorgeous and the food delicious. Bar was ace - what a view! I had a swim in the lake straight from the jetty was wonderful! Had a trip on the hotel's private 1920s motor yacht which was amazing! Our crew/pilots were Richard and Peter who were friendly and provided lots of interesting information and shared stories about the area. Loved it! Thanks for making a special visit such a lovely success x

Had the best time here. The location of the hotel is perfect by the lake. Our lakeview rooms were spacious and lovely. The staff was very nice. What elevated our experience was the restaurant staff - both at the fine dining as well as the terrace restaurant. And the last highlight of our stay was the Albatros cruise. Neil and Peter were fantastic hosts. Peter gave us all the stories and information about the nearby sightseeing points. Thank you to everyone. We can’t wait to be back.

Our first visit to Langdale Chase was when our little girl was just three months old, and it was such a special time for our family. From the moment we arrived, the team went above and beyond to make our stay as comfortable and memorable as possible. We loved it so much that we couldn’t wait to return, and we finally made it back this year. I was slightly nervous, wondering if it could possibly feel as magical as our first visit but somehow, it was even more special. There’s something truly peaceful about Langdale Chase. It’s one of the only places where we completely switch off from everyday life and simply enjoy being together. We spent quality time as a family, indulging in incredible food, paddleboarding on the lake, and taking a wonderful trip aboard the Albatross. The setting is simply breathtaking, picture-perfect in every way. A special thank you to Wayne, Micheal and their team for the exceptional food. Every single dish was beautifully prepared, and there honestly wasn’t one we didn’t love. Adrian who worked front of house was also very attentive, making sure we had everything we needed during each sitting. On our final day, we ran into an unexpected problem that could have meant missing our train, but Amy came to our rescue at the very last minute, zipping us across to the station in the hotels Land Rover. We were so grateful for her kindness and willingness to help. Pete was also wonderful, always taking the time to stop and chat whenever he could. The fact that he even remembered us from our previous visit made us feel incredibly welcome. Thank you to everyone at Langdale Chase for another unforgettable stay. It’s a truly special place, and we already can’t wait to return.

We hosted a family gathering at Langdale Chase on Lake Windermere and the trip could not have been more perfect! The hotel is amazing and the staff is even better. Mike Vincent and his team delivered an experience we will cherish for years to come. The food from Michael Cole & team was top notch (special call out to his Beef Wellington) and was delivered with excellence and charm by Mel and her team. Marcio and Summer were also fantastic! They were full of smiles and greeted us warmly by name each time they saw us! The whole staff was truly amazing - I wish I had more of the names of the staff to praise!
