Camping near Oxford: The Closest Campsites and How to Get into the City

Campsites within a few miles of Oxford, family parks with pools, Thames-side glamping, and how to get into the city without driving.

Oxford is an expensive city to sleep in and a difficult one to drive into, which is why camping just outside it works so well. There are campsites within four or five miles of the centre, more along the Thames to the west, and several large family parks a little further out, all within reach of the park-and-ride buses. This guide groups them by distance and by type. The full list is on our Oxford camping page.

Getting into the city from a campsite

Driving into the centre is slow and parking is scarce and costly. Oxford has park-and-ride sites on each of the main approaches, with frequent buses into the centre, and for most visitors that is the simplest way in. Some of the nearest campsites are also on ordinary bus routes or within cycling distance. Ask the site which they recommend before you arrive.

The closest campsites to Oxford

Valley Farm Campsite is the nearest we list, under four miles from the centre. It takes tents, caravans and motorhomes, has glamping and electric hook-ups, welcomes dogs and allows campfires; it is rated 4.1 from over 300 Google reviews. At Horspath, on the eastern edge of the city, Greenacres Campsite offers a similar mix of pitches and is rated 4.4. To the south, Peach Croft Farm near Abingdon is a small farm site for caravans and motorhomes with hook-ups, rated 4.5.

Family parks with pools

Two of the best-known parks in Oxfordshire are a short drive out. Lincoln Farm Park at Standlake has two indoor pools, takes tents, caravans and motorhomes, and is rated 4.7 from over 550 reviews. Diamond Caravan and Camping Park at Bletchingdon has a heated outdoor pool and is rated 4.4. Close by, Greenhill Leisure Park takes tents and tourers, accepts dogs and is rated 4.5 from nearly 480 reviews, and Hardwick Park near Witney is a family site for tents and motorhomes.

By the Thames and smaller sites

West of the city the Thames winds through quiet farmland. Oxford Riverside Glamping has pods and lodges, rated 4.7, and Bablock Hythe Caravan Park sits on the river with boat moorings. For a simpler stay, D'Oyleys Farm takes tents and motorhomes and is rated 4.9, High Lodge Farm near Abingdon has tent pitches and glamping, and Weston Caravan and Campsite allows campfires and welcomes dogs.

What to check before booking

How you will get into Oxford. A site two miles further out but next to a park-and-ride can be quicker than a nearer one. Graduation and open-day weekends. The city fills several times a year and the closest sites go with it. Pitch type. Certificated farm sites are often for caravans and motorhomes only. Pools. Outdoor pools are seasonal; check dates if that is the reason for choosing a park.

Beyond the city

A campsite here is also a base for Woodstock and Blenheim Palace, the market towns of Witney, Abingdon and Thame, and the eastern edge of the Cotswolds. For the city itself see our Oxford guide, and for more ideas our guides to summer staycations and glamping for first-timers.
