About The Angel Hotel
The Angel has stood on Angel Hill in Bury St Edmunds since the 15th century, though the ivy-covered facade most people recognise is Georgian. It faces the Abbey Gate and the abbey ruins directly, which makes it one of the best-placed hotels in the town. Charles Dickens stayed and gave readings here, and the building keeps a strong sense of its coaching-inn past without feeling like a museum.
There are 77 individually designed bedrooms across the main house and neighbouring buildings. The range is wide: entry-level rooms are straightforward and good value, while the larger front-facing rooms and suites look out over Angel Hill and the Abbey Gate and have four-posters or freestanding baths. Interiors mix period features with bold colour and contemporary fabrics, and the corridors wind unpredictably, as they tend to in buildings of this age.
Eating and drinking options are spread through the ground floor and cellars. The Eaterie serves modern British food using East Anglian suppliers, the bar and lounge handle lighter meals and afternoon tea, and the medieval Underground Vaults are used for private dining and events. Breakfast is served in the Eaterie, and the hotel keeps flexible hours for guests arriving from the nearby A14.
Bury St Edmunds is a compact and walkable town, and the Abbey Gardens, the Theatre Royal, the Greene King brewery and the cathedral are all within a few minutes on foot. The hotel suits weekend visitors, business guests needing an easy A14 base, and families wanting a central town position rather than a rural one. On-site parking is limited and charged, so it is worth reserving a space in advance.

Perfect spot for a short stay in Bury St Edmund's! The valet parking was particularly helpful and quick. Giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because the rooms ar small and missing some basic amenities -- no iron, no washcloths and no hair conditioner. Seems like an oversight for a hotel that is so service-oriented otherwise.

What a stunning building! I booked this hotel on a wim, last minute because I wanted some AC due to the extreme hot weather. It was near Lavenham, very historic, so I spent the morning there then i travelled up to Bury St Edmunds and to the Angel hotel. I hadn't even researched the place, just that it had AC, parking, and right next to an Abbey and lucious grounds and shops to wander around.....and boy, im glad I did!! Stunning hotel, decor, stunning food and the best sauvinon blanc I'd ever tasted :) I also found out about its history! Charles Dickens stayed there....also meant to be haunted like many of the buildings in Bury! I didnt come across any ghosts but I doubt i would have felt their cold presences with the much needed AC :) As a last minute booking, I was overjoyed with the experience, helpful, polite staff ..there's also a cellar vault (meant to be haunted) that you can visit and drink in. Although i didn't check that out as I was only there for the night. Stunning hotel, stunning location.! Thanks guys.
