Photo: Beaford Country House

Beaford House is a substantial detached residence in rural Torridge, built to accommodate large gatherings. Nine bedrooms and nine bathrooms means every guest has their own ensuite or nearby facilities. The house sleeps 21 across a mix of kingsize, double and single beds, with one four-poster room and another that can take a cot if needed. All the essentials—bed linen, towels, heating, electricity and wifi—are covered.

Ground-floor living is spread across two sitting rooms (one with a television, one without), a dining room with space for celebrations, and a kitchen fitted with an Aga alongside modern appliances for serious cooking. Three open fires and patio doors opening to the garden provide multiple ways to gather and relax. Outside, a heated swimming pool (10m by 4m, open mid-May to mid-September) and an eight-person hot tub sit in the grounds, which include lawned areas, a barbecue hut and parking for ten cars. The property is licensed for weddings. Pets stay free of charge. No smoking throughout.

We honestly couldn’t have dreamed of a more perfect place for our wedding. Set in the most beautiful countryside, it truly felt like a little slice of heaven—peaceful, scenic, and completely magical. One of the things we loved most about this venue was the freedom it gave us. As a DIY space, we were able to style and dress everything exactly how we wanted, which made the day feel so personal and uniquely “us.” Seeing it all come together was incredibly special. Staying on-site for two nights made the whole experience even more memorable. It meant we could really soak it all in, spend quality time with our loved ones, and enjoy the celebrations without feeling rushed. It turned our wedding into more than just a day—it felt like a full experience. The owner was fantastic throughout the entire process—always supportive, easy to communicate with, and genuinely helpful and thoughtful to what we wanted. That level of care made such a difference and gave us real peace of mind in the lead-up to the big day. If you’re looking for a relaxed, beautiful countryside venue where you can truly make your wedding your own, this place is just perfect. We’ll treasure the memories forever.

I recently spent a weekend away with friends at Beaford House. It was a spacious house that met the needs of our very large group well. The beds were comfortable but the inside was fairly dated, the house could do with some simple renovations and repairs (eg the kitchen door handle wasn't screwed on, towel rails fell off after putting a towel on it). The garden was particularly good with a hot tub, pool and fantastic views. Sadly our weekend was tainted by the very bad attitude of the owner. Please be aware that the owner's house is very close to the property - giving her ample opportunity for regular check ups on the house. If the tidiness and cleanliness of the property aren't up to her standards she will certainly let you know - after our first evening in the property she came snooping around the house and garden early in the morning, long before we had a chance to tidy up after the night before - at which time she unleashed a torrent of rage at us in what can only be described as a school-like dressing-down. One evening when some of us went in the pool after dark we were met by the screaming owner once again - a simple 'please can you keep the noise down' or 'could you please not go in the pool after dark' would have sufficed (we are not unreasonable people and would have obliged!!). The way that she went about this 'telling off' was just absurd and extremely rude. Comments such as 'you need to get some new friends' to one member of our group, and going out of her way to tell a waiting taxi driver that we had 'trashed the place' was quite frankly extremely unprofessional and unnecessary (especially as we left the place spotless!). The owner had clearly taken an immediate dislike to our group from the offset - for the most part unfairly. I've no doubt she will reply to this review with an over exaggeration of the truth - all I would say is if you are a group of young adults be prepared to be treated like children for your stay!!

A beautiful house aimed at the stag and hen parties. Great pool, hot tub was hot although could probably to with a service as some of the jets no longer worked. Rooms were comfortable although a bit dated. En suites were ok but could probably do with a refresh, perfectly adequate though. Relaxing areas were relaxing looking out to spectacular scenery and the gardens are fantastic. The grand banquet room could probably do with new carpet. All in all we will probably go back but please remember it is aimed at stag and hen parties so don't expect a plush grand house ..... The pool and hot tub and BBQ hut made the week.
