April Cottage is a traditional whitewashed stone cottage in Staveley-in-Cartmel, a quiet hamlet in South Lakeland. The whole property is yours alone, with two bedrooms (one with a kingsize bed, one with two single beds), a shower room, and living spaces spread over ground and first floors. On-road parking is available outside.

The kitchen is equipped for self-catering with an electric cooker, microwave, fridge, freezer and washing machine. The living room has a TV and DVD player, plus an electric woodburner for warmth. Bed linen, towels, Wi-Fi and electricity are included; you'll need to bring your own supplies or shop locally. One well-behaved pet can come with you. The cottage does not permit smoking.

Ulverston's independent shops, cafés and pubs are four miles away. Windermere is within walking distance, with Gummers Howe a noted picnic spot nearby and woodland walks leading straight from the cottage into the surrounding fells. The Millerbeck Light Railway is close by if you're interested in heritage steam trains.

1. Cleanliness: The cottage itself had not been cleaned very well. The kitchen table was dirty and cups in the cupboard had not been cleaned properly. Furthermore, there were lumps of hair in the bin which hadn’t been emptied and baskets on shelves/windowsills which were full of dust and clumps of dirt. There were also large clumps of cobwebs around the beams, in corners, under the stairs and around the beds. Many of these had spiders. I understand that it is an old building but the amount of cobwebs suggests that it had not been cleaned ready for our stay. There was also dust on surfaces and on the bottom of the side table in the downstairs bedroom. 2. Cleanliness of bed linen and towels On entering the bedroom upstairs there was a strange smell and it transpired that this was coming from the bed sheets. The same smell was also evident in the towels which again suggests that they had not been cleaned properly. 3. Leaking shower This was the main issue. On first use of the shower it became apparent that the shower was not draining. As such, the water soon filled the tray and flooded the bathroom floor and then began leaking through the ceiling into the lounge. When this happened, we attempted to contact the owner but the call was not answered. A message was left explaining the situation and a contact number for the owner to get back to us but nobody bothered to respond. As such we were left to deal with the situation ourselves – on what was supposedly a holiday! 4. Equipment There was a hoover to be used but it had not been emptied – another example of the general cleanliness of the cottage was not up to standard. One toilet roll was provided for a 4 night stay with no spares! 5. Parking The April Cottage website advertises that there is a designated parking space. This space was not always available for us and we had to deal with a very unfriendly neighbour who told us that the space was as much hers as ours.
