Walking through the door of The Calf Shed, you enter an open-plan ground floor where living and dining flow together beneath pitched beams. The kitchen is fitted for proper cooking rather than holiday-flat basics, and an electric fire warms the space. Stairs lead up to a galleried bedroom where a four-poster double awaits, with an ensuite shower room tucked alongside. One car can park on site, and the whole place is yours alone.
This converted barn sits a mile from Alston, highest of England's market towns, behind the owner's home alongside two other holiday cottages. Electricity, Wi-Fi, bed linen and towels are all included. The real draw for many will be the shared hot tub—accessed on a rota basis with the other properties—where you can soak while views reach across the South Tyne Valley. One well-behaved pet stays free. Walkers find the Pennine Way literally on the doorstep; the broader North Pennines offer fell paths in every direction, and Alston itself has cobbled streets lined with independent shops, cafés and pubs. Hadrian's Wall lies within reach, as do the Lake District and the Scottish Borders for those with a car.

We’ve just returned from a short break at The Cottage between Christmas and New Year. We loved it. The cottage was wonderful. Clean, spacious, and perfectly remote. Ideal for our family of four and our dog. The owners even decorated for Christmas and left milk and treats. We made good use of the hot tub on two evenings. Booking was simple and on both nights no one else had reserved it, so it felt like we had it all to ourselves. We walked into Alston one afternoon, a lovely walk across fields and public footpaths. It's a small town with not a huge amount going on, but that suited us. We ate at Alston House and The Cumberland Inn; both were friendly pubs serving decent food. We also drove to High Force Waterfall, about 30 minutes away. Absolutely worth the trip. The cottage had all the essentials, but nothing beyond that, so if you’re staying for longer you might want to bring extras like board games, salt and pepper etc. Overall, The Cottage and the surrounding area were perfect for us. It was great value for money, and we’d really happily return.
