Harbut Law Holiday Cottages - The Milking Parlour

A mile from Alston's cobbled market square, The Milking Parlour sits among three 18th-century barn conversions set behind the owner's home. The location puts you within reach of serious walking country: the Pennine Way starts at the gate, Hadrian's Wall and its Roman fort are easily reached, and trails fan out across the North Pennines in all directions. Alston itself—one of England's highest towns—has independent shops, pubs, restaurants and a narrow-gauge railway, while Beamish Museum, the Lake District and the Scottish Borders are all within driving distance.

The whole cottage is yours: two bedrooms (one double, one twin), a bathroom with shower over the bath, and a ground-floor layout that keeps everything on one level. The living space has an open fire, Freeview TV and a kitchen equipped for proper cooking. Bed linen, towels and wi-fi are included, along with heating. A shared hot tub on the property offers views towards Mount Hooley and across the South Tyne Valley—there's also a bike store and parking for one car. One dog stays free. No smoking indoors.

This suits groups of friends or a family wanting a base for serious exploring, or anyone who simply wants to soak in the tub after a day on the hills.

We’ve just returned from a short break at The Cottage between Christmas and New Year. We loved it. The cottage was wonderful. Clean, spacious, and perfectly remote. Ideal for our family of four and our dog. The owners even decorated for Christmas and left milk and treats. We made good use of the hot tub on two evenings. Booking was simple and on both nights no one else had reserved it, so it felt like we had it all to ourselves. We walked into Alston one afternoon, a lovely walk across fields and public footpaths. It's a small town with not a huge amount going on, but that suited us. We ate at Alston House and The Cumberland Inn; both were friendly pubs serving decent food. We also drove to High Force Waterfall, about 30 minutes away. Absolutely worth the trip. The cottage had all the essentials, but nothing beyond that, so if you’re staying for longer you might want to bring extras like board games, salt and pepper etc. Overall, The Cottage and the surrounding area were perfect for us. It was great value for money, and we’d really happily return.

We stayed over Christmas 2024 and can honestly say what a wonderful time we had. The location is stunning and the cottages lovely, the owners were great and we had a lovely welcome pack with festive treats which was a lovely gesture. Highly recommended and we would visit again definitely….
