About Gorse Hill Hotel
Woking's Hook Heath area, on the edge of Surrey's countryside, is where you'll find the Gorse Hill Hotel, a 50-room property known locally for its calm gardens and welcoming atmosphere. The setting is a genuine draw, with landscaped grounds and outdoor seating giving the place a relaxed, greener feel than you might expect so close to town.
Rooms come with en-suite bathrooms, family and accessible options, and extras such as room service and drinks in room, though some guests have found the upkeep of rooms inconsistent, so it's worth bearing in mind. Food is a strength here, with a restaurant serving a well-regarded breakfast and gluten-free choices, alongside a bar, kids' meals and outdoor dining space. The hotel also has a gym, meeting rooms, laundry and porter services, plus free on-site parking and an electric vehicle charge point.
Staff are consistently described as friendly and attentive, and the location suits both leisure and business stays, with golf and fishing nearby along with local pubs and restaurants. Pets are welcome too, making it a practical base for exploring Woking and the surrounding Surrey countryside.
What guests say
I recently booked a solo staycation at Gorse Hill in Woking, surrey for 2 nights as part of a last minute booking using a virgin experience days gift voucher which included breakfast and dinner and i'm really glad I decided to do so . The hotel is easy to reach from London. The journey from Waterloo Station is just 25 mins by train followed by a quick 15 min taxi ride ( £13 ). The grounds are beautiful, it's of greenery and theres ple ty of free parking if driving. The guest rooms ate located away from the main reception building ( which houses the restaurant and bar ) making rooms peaceful. Whilst rooms don't contain a fridge or microwave, all the other amenities were fine ( note there is no steam iron just a normal iron ) and the on site restaurant and bar menu is varied for breakfast lunch and dinner. My stay highlight was the staff who were great. Harry the onsite manager, Leah and Holly the waitresses and then reception team were great and their attention to detail was appreciated. I did note that the older male restaurant manager seemed a little miserable so definitely needs some of their happy energy. The stay overall was wonderful and definitely somewhere I would consider visiting again. Thanks all to the team at Gorse Hill and Virgin experience days!

Peaceful grounds, amazing evening food menu. Lovely terrace, great staff on hand very polite and nothing too much trouble. Room amd bathroom clean, walk in shower was great, powerful shower. Definitely stay again. Breakfast Lovely, good choices, if I had to be picky I'd say I'd prefer a different type of vege sausage with breakfast please.

This lovely property has a lot of positives, but a few major drawbacks. The Pros: The grounds are beautiful, featuring great outdoor seating areas near the main building and the event space. The bar has a wonderful, character-filled "old school" vibe. My room was also spacious and comfortable. The Cons: The hotel room was uncomfortably hot. There is no air conditioning, and with outdoor temperatures hitting 92°F (33°C), the room was boiling. Since the windows only open about two inches, a fan would have gone a long way, but none was provided. Conversely, the meeting rooms were freezing cold with no way to adjust the thermostat. Additionally, the bathroom felt a bit dated. The food during lunch and dinner service was bland and disappointing, with very limited vegetarian options.

I’ve really enjoyed my stay at the hotel, and a big part of that has been the experience at the bar thanks to Christian. He has been absolutely fantastic behind the bar—professional, attentive, and genuinely welcoming from the moment you sit down. Christian creates such a great atmosphere, whether it’s mixing drinks perfectly, making thoughtful recommendations, or simply having a friendly conversation. He’s attentive without being overbearing and makes sure everyone feels looked after. His positive energy and attention to detail really stand out. It’s clear he takes pride in what he does, and it definitely elevates the whole experience. The bar has been one of the highlights of my stay, all thanks to Christian.
