Canterland Lodge

Aberdeenshire

Canterland Lodge opens into a generous open-plan living space that runs the length of the ground floor, with the kitchen at one end, dining area in the middle, and a sitting room anchored by a wood burner at the far end. French doors lead directly onto an enclosed patio and terrace, so the garden feels like an extension of the house. The scale of it—with five bedrooms and four bathrooms across the property—means ten people can spread out without crowding, each with their own space to retreat to.

The River Esk runs past the boundary, close enough that you can access walks along its banks from the terrace. On a good day you might see otters or watch fish jump; fishing is available by arrangement with the owner, subject to the season and advance booking. The immediate area has a pub within walking distance at Marykirk, and a farm shop and bistro about a mile away. For longer expeditions, you're well placed for the Angus Glens, Royal Deeside, and the Mearns—or if you want something quieter, Montrose's nature reserve is a short drive, where pink-footed geese roost in winter. A sandy beach lies five miles off. Bed linen, towels and wifi are provided; the kitchen is fully equipped for cooking. Smoking is not permitted in the house.
