Scotland's Secret Nuclear Bunker

We found this place by accident, It was on a sign. And a sign saying secret bunker 6 miles. Yeah that is uncommon enough to check it out. And it did not disappoint. We drove to what seemed like a farmhouse prepped for a local Apocalypse but as well parked on the quite large a parking lot i might add. It became clear it was a museum of some kind. Inside the kind staff member told us we found a cold war related museum and that there was a large 2 floor bunker under our feet. We bought 2 tickets as well as an audio guide for 3 pound a person. If you are interested in cold war history i highly Reccommend spending the extra pounds. The bunker was a secret underground nuclear Command Center between 1953 and 1993 and not long after turned into a museum. You get a verry good feeling of how it was back in the day to be in the bunker. And if you deside to grab a drink in the cafe underground? At some point you forget for a moment you are deep underground. If you are in the area and like military or war related stuff? I'd Reccommend visiting. Do plan about 2 Hours if you take the audio guide. There is a lot to see.

A cool place to explore with some interesting stories. Lots of historic exhibits and two small cinemas with informational films playing. A quick look around easily took us an hour and a half. Has a cafe deep inside the bunker too.

A fascinating insight into Cold War architecture, procedures and processes. Both in its early days as an air control centre and later as a government outpost in case of nuclear war (although as has been pointed out, the only time a government minister would have been in residence was if he was in Anstruther on holiday at the time). A little more information on the artifacts would be welcome, and a more welcoming cafe that advertised the hot food better) but still well worth a visit. Interesting if random military hardware (such as the SA-2 Guideline and Green Goddess fire appliance parked up top.

Such a wonderful place, so interesting to learn more about what Scotland did for the cold war effort. I remember the nuclear drills in school, this brought a lot of memories back, to a what seemed like a much more innocent time. To see the preparedness and planning that went into the bunker to keep royalty, political leaders, and the heads of the military safe from anything but a direct hit is phenomenal. And at the top, the farmhouse is so unassuming. Thank you to all involved for keeping this museum alive, and letting the general public have a small insight into things we were never meant to see. Highly likely to visit again and would recommend a visit.
