Argyll and Bute

Fishing, walking and wildlife watching are the draws on Bute, and Chandlers Apartment puts you within reach of all three. Loch Fad lies 3 miles away for rainbow trout, while Scalpsie Bay—a short drive—hosts a substantial seal colony set against Arran. The island's interior rolls through gentle hills and moorland; its shoreline is punctuated by sandy beaches and rocky coves. Wild goats, buzzards and roe deer roam the landscape, and standing stones at Ettrick Bay and the ancient chapel of St Blane reward exploration on foot or by bike.

The apartment occupies the second floor of Chandlers Country House. Four bedrooms—sleeping 10 in total—each have an en-suite bathroom, and the open-plan living and dining space shares the floor with a fully equipped kitchen. You get heating, electricity, bed linen, towels and wifi; the patio overlooks the water and comes with garden furniture. Private parking accommodates four cars. No smoking indoors.

This works for large families or groups needing separate bathrooms for everyone. The shoreline is yards away, and nowhere on the island is far from somewhere worth visiting—whether that's a coastal walk, a fishing trip or simply somewhere to sit and watch the water.

We booked here 15 months in advance, fully paid up 6 months before our visit, and the owner by the name of Allison cancelled it 2 months before our trip was due under the reasoning of her family was having a wedding (which she also did not declare in her original email, otherwise stating ‘family cricumstances’). When offered alternatives, they were unsuitable and would not house all the guests who had paid £700 per family to stay, and when told this was not suitable, told us she would have to cancel but was trying to coerce the families into lying on cancellation forms so she wouldn’t lose out on our £1800 deposit money. I’m sure it looks beautiful, just a shame about who owns it.

This is a lovely hotel. We got a lovely welcome by the owner, so relaxed & made to feel right at home. The room was lovely & clean & I loved the set up for breakfast. Continental breakfast with lots to choose from & the option to buy hot food at a very reasonable price. We decided the toast, cereals & pastries were more than enough & the coffee was very good indeed. We couldn't dine there on the first night as the restaurant was closed, we were told they were having a night off, quite right! We dined in the restaurant on the second night & again the food & service were excellent! I'd definitely recommend this hidden gem!

Stayed for one night and would definitely stay again. Absolutely beautiful rooms, beautifully decorated, exceptionally clean and the full Scottish breakfast could not have been more perfect! Lovely, friendly and very welcoming. Thank you! 😃

Stayed for weekend with family for a 60th. Beautiful house in a beautiful location and value for money. Internally the cleaning of the accommodation could benefit from a little more attention to detail. No one really readily available to complain to. Besides this we had good weekend.
