Chandlers Country House - The Nest

Argyll and Bute

Photo: Chandlers Apartment

Isle of Bute sits on Scotland's west coast, straddling the Highland Line with landscapes that shift from fertile rolling hills to heather moorland and sandy beaches. The island draws walkers, cyclists and anglers, with Loch Fad three miles inland offering rainbow trout fishing. Wildlife includes wild goats, buzzards, roe deer and seal colonies at Scalpsie Bay. Historical sites range from Iron Age forts to Victorian mansions like Mount Stuart, open to the public with gardens.

Chandlers Country House – The Nest is a three-bedroom, single-bathroom house sleeping eight, set in a rural location yards from the shoreline. All rooms are on the ground floor: a double bedroom (4ft 6in), a second double (4ft 6in), and a twin with two singles (3ft each). The open-plan living space contains a sofa bed and Freeview Smart TV; the kitchen is equipped for proper cooking with a gas cooker, dishwasher and microwave. A front garden with patio and furniture provides outdoor space. One car can park on site. Wi-Fi, electricity, bed linen and towels are included; a travel cot and highchair are available on request. No smoking throughout.

We booked here 15 months in advance, fully paid up 6 months before our visit, and the owner by the name of Allison cancelled it 2 months before our trip was due under the reasoning of her family was having a wedding (which she also did not declare in her original email, otherwise stating ‘family cricumstances’). When offered alternatives, they were unsuitable and would not house all the guests who had paid £700 per family to stay, and when told this was not suitable, told us she would have to cancel but was trying to coerce the families into lying on cancellation forms so she wouldn’t lose out on our £1800 deposit money. I’m sure it looks beautiful, just a shame about who owns it.

This is a lovely hotel. We got a lovely welcome by the owner, so relaxed & made to feel right at home. The room was lovely & clean & I loved the set up for breakfast. Continental breakfast with lots to choose from & the option to buy hot food at a very reasonable price. We decided the toast, cereals & pastries were more than enough & the coffee was very good indeed. We couldn't dine there on the first night as the restaurant was closed, we were told they were having a night off, quite right! We dined in the restaurant on the second night & again the food & service were excellent! I'd definitely recommend this hidden gem!

Stayed for one night and would definitely stay again. Absolutely beautiful rooms, beautifully decorated, exceptionally clean and the full Scottish breakfast could not have been more perfect! Lovely, friendly and very welcoming. Thank you! 😃

Stayed for weekend with family for a 60th. Beautiful house in a beautiful location and value for money. Internally the cleaning of the accommodation could benefit from a little more attention to detail. No one really readily available to complain to. Besides this we had good weekend.
