The Merchant Hotel

The receptionist and the bellhop were fantastic making the check in process a breeze. We got upgraded to the suite so that was very nice. The room was very nice and comfortable. The only problem was the bathroom - the exhaust fan was not working well, there seems to be a stench all the time, the toilet was very old and the shower stall was extremely small and cramped. The turn down service and the housekeeping staff were excellent as well. The location is fantastic - it is in the cathedral district and is close to everything.

So beautiful on the outside and inside, great service with everything and an amazing cocktail bar. We stayed here for my girlfriend’s birthday for a night and she even got a surprise in our room when we got back there after we went out to dinner. The hot tub on the roof was great and we really enjoyed the steam and sauna rooms also.

Very disappointing. Rooms are incredibly, shockingly dark. Windows don't open so no fresh air. Furniture is shabby and stained, every space is cramped. No water pressure in showers. I asked for a refrigerator and neither of them worked. The staff were lovely and tried their best, but this place is several levels below a 5 star. Not at all worth what they charge.

My wife and I recently enjoyed afternoon tea and cocktails, spending a total of £170 including service charge. The afternoon tea with a cocktail each came to around £130, with two additional cocktails in the bar at £16 each, plus a 10% service charge. The cocktails were excellent, unique, well-crafted, and supported by a menu with plenty of choice. The afternoon tea itself was very good overall. We really appreciated the flexibility to swap sandwiches, and the unlimited tea was a nice touch. Everything was fresh, and the scones tasted as though they had just come out of the oven. That said, while the desserts looked and sounded impressive, two of the three were a little underwhelming in flavour. The staff were friendly, attentive, and helpful throughout, and the setting itself is beautiful. However, we did notice crumbs on the seats and carpet around the tables, which could have done with a quick clean, something you wouldn’t expect at this price point. Afternoon tea here is on the expensive side, but The Merchant Hotel does deliver a sense of luxury and exclusivity. We’ve stayed and dined here many times and have always had a great experience, though this was our first afternoon tea. Personally, I’d be more inclined to spend the money on a stay or dinner, as I don’t feel the afternoon tea offers the same value compared to other options in the city. That said, it still earns 5 stars overall, value is subjective, and with a few small improvements to the desserts and perhaps an extra sandwich, it would be even better.
