What visitors say
The grounds and the house are definitely worth visiting. While the house is still owned by the Rothschild's, you can visit the ground floor but the upper floor is restricted, but don't let that deter you from visiting it if you're in the area. The transformation from a 17th century farmhouse to this grand Edwardian manor is spectacular. The grounds themselves have linked zones to explore and are very well maintained as you would expect from the NT. The whole estate has some 30 acres. I would recommend taking a picnic though as the coffee shop, in my opinion, is somewhat lacking, and is your a tea drinker, let's just say, it's not too my liking. (This will not be included in this review).

Beautiful well manicured gardens with several fountains .Those were lovely to look at. ..downside..even though there is sloping wheelchair access the prettiest routes have steps to negotiate. Not Dodgy knees friendly! The actual house is beautiful and picturesque but was closed for the day when we went. Some effort at games for children on the journey around the garden had been made. The tea room.. Very cramped and the queue was very long. Price a little eye watering.maybe it's me but 4.99 for a sausage roll seemed a bit steep. Sandwiches expensive. Cake for a thin slice out of budget. Tea, although very nice, was served in a paper cup. Cutlery was balsa wood? Suggest a flask and sandwiches and some juice boxes for children.

An excellent example of well maintained and well tended gardens, the estate is vast and there’s a lot to see. Ascott House is right in the middle of the estate and there’s are exquisite collection of Chinese pottery and other items of interest. However, the furniture and decor is not of great quality and quite ordinary and drab looking. Unfortunately taking photos indoors are not allowed. The admission is low as compared with other similar National Trust properties but the house is small and only ground floor was open to visitors in late April.

Visited today, it's about 60 miles away for us so we expected a decent day out, which I think overall we had. We arrived at opening time, 11.30am, and found the ticket/booking kiosk completely overwhelmed with the queue stretching half way along the carpark, suggest a midday arrival might be less frustrating as the queue had diminished slightly by then. We spent about three hours looking around. The gardens are very well maintained and today the grounds were carpeted with daffodils, a truly spectacular sight. I think another visit later in the garden season will prove well worth the drive. The picnic area is disappointing, hence the 4 star rating. It is just an area of grass which seems to be used as overflow parking at more busy periods. There are no benches or tables, and of course the grass was wet so we were the only ones who used it having gone prepared with a waterproof blanket. The small cafe was busy all day and queueing was necessary even for a drink, we were fortunate to have taken flasks. We found the interior of the house, although limited, contained some fine paintings and works of art and the guides were extremely informative and friendly. Thanks to all the staff and volunteers.
