Leighton Buzzard sits at the northern tip of the Chiltern Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty of beech woodland, chalk streams and steep-sided coombes, and the countryside around the town offers a gentler, greener alternative to camping deep in the hills themselves. As with anywhere else in England, wild camping is not permitted without the landowner's express permission, so pitch at one of the licensed campsites, farm sites and glamping stays scattered through the surrounding villages instead. Several working farms within a few miles of the town have opened up fields for camping and glamping, ranging from simple back-to-basics pitches to yurts and fitted glamping pods with kitchens and wood-fired hot tubs, often just a short walk from a village pub.
The terrain here is markedly easier going than the steeper central Chilterns further south: rolling farmland, canal-side meadows and light woodland rather than punishing hills, which makes it a good option for families or those new to camping. The Grand Union Canal towpath running through the area gives flat, reliable walking and cycling routes straight from many sites, while Rushmere Country Park and the wider Chiltern fringe are within easy reach for a longer day out. Spring through early autumn is the most comfortable stretch for camping, when farm sites are fully open and the canal towpaths and country park trails are at their best, though many glamping pods and yurts extend well into autumn thanks to wood burners and proper insulation. Midweek and shoulder-season stays tend to be quieter and often better value, particularly at the smaller, adults-only sites in the area, while weekends around the heritage railway's special steam events can book up fastest.
