About Riviera Hotel & Holiday Apartments Alum Chine

Seventy-five rooms make Riviera Hotel & Holiday Apartments Alum Chine one of the larger places to stay in this part of Bournemouth, and it leans on that scale with a proper spread of facilities: an indoor swimming pool, a gym, and a spa and sauna for guests who want more than just a bed for the night. Rooms come as en-suite doubles, family rooms and accessible options, though some are showing their age rather than feeling freshly renovated.

A restaurant and bar cover breakfast and evening meals, with kids' meals and a snack bar for less formal moments, and there's a garden, picnic area and outdoor seating for fine weather. Free WiFi, drinks in the rooms, laundry service and concierge help round out the practical side, and free on-site parking is a genuine plus in a seaside town where that's not always guaranteed. Pets are welcome too.

The location near the beach at Alum Chine is one of its strongest cards, good for anyone keen on watersports, walking or simply getting sand between their toes. Golf, fishing, cycling routes and further pubs and restaurants are all within reach nearby, and the New Forest National Park is close enough for a day trip. Staff are consistently described as helpful, which counts for a lot when a hotel of this size is fairly full.

We booked this last minute as a different local hotel let us down. Parking was available and we were greeted by a friendly chap on reception. The room was clean and had everything we needed, the bed was comfy and we slept really well! The hot tub and pool were lush! Breakfast was good, friendly staff and a reasonable selection. The only negative would be that the rooms are very dated, but this is more personal preference than a negative. The bathroom is nice and modern with a beautiful sky light. I would just recommend updating some of the furniture and plastic seating on the balcony to something a little more impressive. Thank you for a good stay such last minute!

We recently enjoyed a lovely two-night stay at the Riviera as a couple. We booked a standard double room, which, while on the smaller side, was comfortable and spotlessly clean. I know some reviews mention that the hotel is a bit dated, but we actually found it quite charming! It retains that classic, traditional feel you can only truly appreciate during a British seaside holiday. From the moment we checked in, the team was friendly, welcoming, and helpful. Breakfast was served in a spacious, clean dining area with a full English selection and we purchased a package that included dinner and ate at the onsite restaurant for one night. The food was good—nothing overly spectacular, but a decent, relaxing meal paired with great service. The location is fantastic, sitting just a short stroll away from Alum Chine Beach. For a 3-star hotel, I honestly don’t think you could ask for anything more. We had a lovely stay and will definitely return the next time we are looking for a short break in the area!

Superb holiday hotel. Excellent service - Mike was so friendly and helpful. Very child-friendly - so much to do for the little ones: swimming pool, drawing, billiards and much more. EV charging available (1x at the front / 2x at the rear - 7.4 kW). Close to the beach with free parking. Great price. Can’t complain about anything. Comfy beds and a beautiful room view. Just amazing. Very happy - would definitely come back 100% in the future.

Overall, the stay was okay. The hotel itself is quite dated, but everything was functional and clean. The swimming pool was well maintained and a good size, and the restaurant was genuinely good with a very professional and friendly server. However, there is an important point that dog owners should be aware of. Although the hotel is advertised as “pet-friendly”, dogs are not allowed to be left alone in the room at any time. This restriction was not clearly communicated at the time of booking, and we only became aware of it afterwards. The hotel insisted that this policy was clearly stated, but at the time of booking it was not visible on Booking.com or on their mobile website. Interestingly, changes were made to their website after we raised the issue, which suggests the information was not properly accessible beforehand. This restriction makes it very difficult to fully enjoy the stay, as you cannot use facilities like the pool or go to places where dogs are not allowed unless someone remains in the room. In addition, their pet policy mentioned items such as treats and a blanket, which were never provided or even mentioned during the stay, despite the extra daily fee charged. We contacted both the hotel and Booking.com to explain the situation, but the hotel refused any flexibility or cancellation. It is also disappointing that no apology or goodwill gesture was offered. So while the hotel itself is acceptable, the lack of transparency and customer care regarding the pet policy had a clear impact on our overall experience.
