About Royal Exeter Hotel

The Royal Exeter Hotel has the look of a period building given a thorough modern update, its stately frontage on Exeter Road hinting at a longer history than its current comforts suggest. Inside, the 54 rooms are generously sized and kept spotless, with the bright, well-stocked breakfast setting a good tone for the day. Some rooms can pick up noise from outside or the corridors, worth bearing in mind if you're a light sleeper.

Facilities run to a bar for evening drinks, a gym for those keeping up a routine while away, and free WiFi throughout. The hotel also doubles as a wedding venue, so its function rooms are used to hosting bigger occasions as well as everyday stays. Staff are consistently helpful, and there's a secure car park on site, a genuine plus in a town where parking can be tight.

The setting is the hotel's strongest card: it's an easy walk to Bournemouth's beach and the town centre, putting shops, restaurants and the seafront all within reach without needing to drive. For a straightforward, comfortable base close to the sand, the Royal Exeter delivers on the basics well.

We booked as a large group to stay here but due to some recent poor reviews, several of our party changed to another hotel. Big mistake. The Royal Exeter offers excellent, friendly staff who went out of their way to be helpful right from us checking in. The hotel is well presented and wonderfully situated, close to the pier and beach, and central enough for the nightlife. The cocktail bar is great, comfortable and well laid out with various side bars, big screen televisions and live music. There is ample parking on a first come first serve basis, and with limited other parking in the area, this is important. Parking costs £15 per night, which is reasonable given the location. Having recently changed hands, the kitchen was being re-furbished, so there were no breakfasts available, but there are plenty of nearby outlets so this was not a problem. I have deducted one star for the room. My single bed budget priced room as a little tired, but clean and comfortable and worth the money. I understand that the plans are to refurbish all the rooms, and then this hotel will be s serious contender for the best in town. Until then you are guaranteed a comfortable stay and a very warm welcome.

We were very disappointed with our stay. The room was not properly cleaned and did not meet basic standards of comfort. There was construction work taking place below our room early in the morning, creating significant noise and making it impossible to rest. We were not informed about these works before or during our stay. The reception staff were unhelpful and unfriendly, and we felt disrespected when raising our concerns. In addition, we were charged extra for parking, despite already paying, and the charges were not explained clearly. Overall, the service was poor, the room condition was unacceptable, and the noise disturbance seriously affected our stay. We expected much better treatment and a more comfortable experience.

Absolute joke of a hotel.. we have stayed in lots of hotels in Bournemouth but this one if I could I would have given no stars. We originally booked an 2 night stay but checked out the following morning and booked into the Norfolk Royal perfect hotel. Upon arrival we were given a room at the far end of the hotel going up and down stairs. The room was disgustingly dirty a small black Beatle on the bed a massive wasp flying around dust everywhere and the room stunk of mould. We asked to be moved so they did to a room right on top of the club. We weren’t told nothing about the loud thumping noise that started at 8pm and lasted till 4am. The whole room was vibrating. We waited until the morning to go to reception and ask why they didn’t warn us about this when they swapped our rooms only to be told that it’s on there website. When I had a look to see were it stated this I finally found it in small print were you book what room you want but right at the bottom of the page. So if you click onto the room you want you will not see it. Absolute jokers. It only says may have some noise. The receptionist was so rude. No customer service skills whatsoever. Not only is the hotel old tatty and disgusting and the receptionist was horrible and rude raising her voice at us. We got our bags and left we booked ourselves into the Norfolk royal which was 1st class. So no don’t recommend at all unless you want to party until 4am that’s fine otherwise if you want to have a relaxing break forget it.

I was very happy with my room for the price I paid . Directly opposite the Theatre which is what I came for. There was live music in the bar if you like that, but I just wanted a quiet night and slept ok in my room on a higher floor. Staff were very pleasant and helpful.
