Perched on a working beef and sheep farm near the sleepy hamlet of Gwenddwr, Wye Valley Wild Camping offers a properly back-to-basics escape in the Mid Wales hills. The spacious field lies a 15-minute hike from spectacular views along the Wye Valley Walk, with ample footpaths radiating straight from your pitch and quiet, traffic-free lanes for cyclists. Expect portable loos, tap water and no electricity—bring a torch for nocturnal wanderings—but the remote, peaceful setting more than compensates for the simple facilities.
Further afield, the paved trails of the Elan Valley (45 minutes) beckon walkers and cyclists, while the Brecon Beacons National Park (30 minutes) delivers challenging hikes and mountain-bike routes. Despite the seclusion, you're only five minutes' drive from the nearest pub in Erwood, and a quarter-hour from Builth Wells, where convenience stores, takeaways and burger bars ensure you won't go hungry. Campfires and barbecues are welcomed, and dogs are allowed year-round—perfect for a fuss-free wild-camping adventure.

Great Place to stay. Our two Kids had a great time. Playing in the Woods and swimming in the lake. Stayed in our van with a roof top tent. With fresh eggs from the host. Super friendly and supportive host. Highly recommended.

Tanya was a welcoming and obliging host, even offering to run us down to the pub in the evening. Her campsite was clean with good facilities and lots of lovely touches. You can walk down for a dip in the river through the field at the bottom of the campsite. Thank you Tanya!

Fantastic campsite. Low density camping with lots of space in between tents and the grass and meadow flowers left uncut to grown in between pitches. For a place to camp and retreat from busy urban life this is spot on, with a small wooded area part of the site offering birdsong in the evenings and mornings and the opportunity for children to have a bit a freedom to explore with no vehicles around. The facilities are basic with long-drop toilets, 1 shower and 1 washing up point, but all of them are well maintained and clean. The location is fabulous, the river Wye is just a few minutes walk away, and there are also lots of great walking and cycling opportunities from the site. The owner was super helpful and friendly as well which makes a real difference. Highly recommended.

We are local to the area only being 5 miles away, but wantee a quiet chilled night camping with the kids. We couldn't have been more thrilled with Cwm Wye. The site is beautifully maintained thanks to Tanya. A nice surprise to see HOT water showers. The composting toilets are immaculately maintained and cleaned daily (sometimes multiple times!). Can't beat location for tranquility, it was actually some sort of free therapy i'm sure. A short walk down to the river on a sunny evening was therapeutic, and the woodland area was just magical for the kids (and adults). There is no small touch that Tanya hasn't thought of, and no request was too big. Despite being a life long local, I won't hesitate to make a camping trip to Cwm Wye an annual occasion. My kids are self confessed screen addicts and to see them enjoying the site was just blissful.
