The Varsity Hotel & Spa

A comfy room in a boutique-ish hotel, well-located and central. Excellent breakfast in the sixth floor restaurant with great views. Staff are courteous and helpful. Access as standard to the gym and spa next door (not tied to checkout time) which didn't disappoint, for a relaxing Sunday. Here are the niglies. It wasn't clear we received the room we'd booked as the desk staff don't use the same names as the website..turned out a "Fellows" is a king double. Other websites use other terms. Not dissimilar from a premierinn room except nicer wallpaper. Our room didn't have good views..unlike the marketing pics..which, dispite not guaranteed, was a bit disappointing. The heating was difficult..and clearly not working until we called someone who flipped a switch downstairs. The rooftop was closed to normal paying guests. Still a nice experience although cheaper is available. Hence overall a 4

Location right next to the river which is excellent & 15min walk to town centre. However everything surrounding the building is dirty & dingy & it's down an alleyway which is off putting. The service is excellent from the front door, reception, cleaners & waiting staff. The evening meal in SIX was fabulous as were the staff. However the room was disappointing. At £375 I had expected more. The views from the 5th floor are great rooftop views & we watched the sunset from our room but the windows were absolutely filthy as in not cleaned for months on the outside. Found a great tall fan in the corner but the thick dust on it put me off using it. TV uses Cast but as Netflix & Sky don't run Cast there wasn't much TV choice. The mattress was superb but the pillows were so soft that we woke with painful necks. The duvet was really thick & very heavy. The bedding was so creased that it didn't feel nice to get into. We woke at 5.30 really uncomfortable & just sat there until we could go for breakfast at 8am. Must say that the breakfast was amazing. All in all everything other than the room was excellent. I would definitely go to restaurant SIX again for not staying in the hotel

What a perfect stay! I took my wife to Cambridge for our wedding anniversary. We booked just one night and spent 2 days exploring Cambridge as we’d never been before. Whilst driving to Cambridge we called to ask about parking. They offered me valet parking for our stay, which from memory was C.£40. They explained that we could simply pull up right outside the front door and they would take care of the car for us. We arrived a couple hours after calling and a member of staff was standing there awaiting our arrival, he promptly helped us out the car, helped with our luggage and escorted us to reception. That member of staff then noticed our car was an EV and offered to fully charge it for us during our stay at no extra cost. What a lovely gesture and was a huge help, enabling us to drive straight home the next day without a charging stop. The staff were very attentive, happy and helpful. The room was decorated with anniversary balloons, towel swans on the bed, bottle of bubbly on ice, a small cake and petals all over the room for our arrival (I had paid extra for this service but it exceeded my expectations for the money) I’m not 100% sure on the room situation as I had booked the room a while ago, forgetting what size I’d gone, but oretty sure I originally booked the most basic cheapest room they had, but I’m pretty sure they upgraded our room too, perhaps given the occasion. We had a lovely large room with a kingsize bed, a good size bathroom with roll top bath! Was all very clean and well presented. We used the roof top bar that evening and the view was lovely, perfect for sunset, the staff very attentive and knowledgeable about the drinks menu, offering suggestions as my wife wanted to try something different to the usual gin & tonic go to. We used the gym the next morning which was more than adequate and the small spa facilities were clean, quiet and relaxing. We will without hesitation stay there again as the location was perfect for walking straight into the main parts of Cambridge, right next to the river too where they have a doc full of punting boats to hire. My father and I enjoyed a superb Afternoon Tea in the 'Six' restaurant at the Varsity Hotel today. It was right at the top of the building providing stunning views of Cambridge through floor to ceiling windows. It was really comfortable, plenty of squashy cushions on deep sofas on every wall and easy chairs too. The table was so beautifully laid and the tea was DELICIOUS! But above all, the staff were outstanding! From the welcome at the door to the moment I had to dash back because I thought I had left my phone behind, they were so helpful, so polite and professional. Thank you Varsity, we will definitely be back!
