About Metal Bridge Pods

Perched on the River Esk in Cumbria's far north, this tiny pub glamping site offers a quirky cross-border appeal – sleep in England, wake to views of Scotland's Southern Uplands across the water. The handful of well-equipped pods come with comfy beds (bedding included), battery lights, heating, charging points and decking with outdoor furniture, making them ideal for couples embarking on a Scottish road trip or exploring both sides of the border.

Shared facilities include a smart toilet block and free showers in the pub's well-maintained bathroom. The real draw, though, is the pub itself – just across the field – where home-cooked meals, generous portions and excellent-value set menus earn consistent praise. Friendly staff and a cosy atmosphere add to the charm.

Gretna's shops and takeaways are five minutes' drive over the river, while Carlisle (20 minutes) and even Newcastle (just over an hour) make surprisingly easy day trips from this peaceful, scenically placed spot.

What visitors say

Many of the people I visit at work have told me how good the food is here. So, today I took the opportunity whilst passing to see if they could fit me in. I picked the right moment and with a bit of working out who else was booked there was a tiny window I could squeeze in, as it were. I would absolutely say booking is essential. Everyone else was turned away, and the staff dealt very firmly, politely, and confidently with those who were unhappy about there not being a table available. It's a great menu, I eventually decided on the Chicken Goujons with Sweet Chilli Sauce for starters and the Haddock Goujons with Chips and Sweet Chilli Sauce as my main on the two courses for £12 offer. I had a lovely Earl Grey Tea to accompany my meal. The food was perfect, only a short wait, served hot, and my request for a different sauce with my fish was no issue at all. I'll need to return to sample the desserts. I will definitely be booking as I doubt I'll be that lucky again, phone number now added to my phone! The facilities here were okay, and they've converted some toilet cubicles into accessible spaces. There is a conservatory area where you can have a table overlooking the River Esk. There are a couple of picnic style benches outside to the right of the Inn for the brave or the good weather. There is accommodation at the Inn and some self contained pods beyond the car park. It's a very rural location, but by car it's located between Carlisle and Gretna. This location is also on the route of the England Coast Path which is clearly signposted just before the road entrance to the Inn. To access the Inn you need to turn at the Metal Bridge road sign and follow the road past the housing towards the river, to their car park.

Stopped overnight with our motorhome and ate here using this as a pub stopover. This is a busy pub for both so you definately need to book in advance. The staff are very friendly and polite. A big choice of food with daily specials. Everything was well presented, hot and tasty. Price wise it was all sensible what why it's busy. How a pub should be 👍🍻👍 Highly recommended, well done Metal Bridge ✅💯

Went here for dinner after work. The food was really good. 3 courses for £15.95 if you order before 5.45pm. Outstanding value for money. I had chicken gougons to start. Homemade chicken curry with rice and chips for my main. My desert was raspberry sponge and custard. Delicious. Will definitely be going back.

Popped in thinking it wouldn’t be busy as it appeared out of the way, how wrong was I. They did a rejig and managed to fit my wife and I. They seated us right by the windows overlooking the river, which was a boon for me as I could also watch the trains go by. We had food from the set menu and it was fabulous. I can praise The Metal Bridge Inn enough. Thank you for a great meal.
