About Blue Hayes Private Hotel

Blue Hayes sits on Trelyon Avenue, on the slope above Porthminster Beach with a wide view across St Ives Bay to Godrevy Lighthouse. It calls itself a private hotel, which is about right: six suites, no reception desk to speak of, advance bookings only, and an owner-run feel that a larger property could not manage. The house was substantially remodelled and now has a colonnaded terrace at the front that is the best place in the building to sit with a drink in the evening.

All six rooms are suites and all have their own outdoor space, whether a balcony, roof terrace or patio. The Master Suite is the largest, with a big terrace facing the bay; the Godrevy, Bay, Garden and Trelyon suites each have their own outlook, and Lowarth sits at garden level. Rooms are furnished comfortably rather than fashionably, with generous bathrooms, seating areas and plenty of storage. The scale of the rooms is unusual for a property of this type in St Ives.

Breakfast is included and served on the terrace when the weather allows. There is a licensed cocktail bar and a private dining room, and light suppers can be arranged. Crucially for St Ives, there is on-site parking, which removes the single biggest headache of staying in the town. A path leads from the garden down to Porthminster Beach, and from there it is roughly ten minutes on foot into the harbour and the town centre.

Blue Hayes does not take children under ten, and the atmosphere is calm and adult throughout. It suits couples on a longer break, people visiting the Tate and the Hepworth garden, and anyone who wants a comfortable, quiet base with a view rather than a large hotel with facilities. It is closed for a period over winter, so check dates before planning an off-season trip.

I’d like to tell lies and give it just one star because the more people who book in the less opportunity for us to stay but I couldn’t do that. The place is beautiful, everything is immaculate. The food is fantastic and the staff and owners are better. All the staff are great but Malcolm and his son Simon who own Blue Hayes can’t do enough for you. The breakfasts are unbelievable in terms of choice, I knew when we came that they did light meals for evening dinner which was fine because we like eating out. Ate in the hotel last night and tried the Thai salad last night with extra fresh chillies - brilliant! There are people staying here who come year after year for decades - nuff said.

EXCELLENT A REAL GEM The warm welcome from Malcolm on arrival is always very special. Then step into the calming atmosphere of Blue Hayes, our very special hotel in our favourite place, St Ives. All the rooms are spacious and immaculate, our favourite being the Master Suite, having the balcony with amazing views over the bay and the stunning garden. The Blue Hayes team are extremely friendly, helpful and very professional in all that they do. Breakfast is just the best ever, the menu and food are outstanding. Everything about the hotel makes our stay wonderful and special. Thanks, Malcolm and team. Mike and Lin Campion

Absolutely amazing private hotel that gives you a warm welcome following a long journey, the staff are very attentive and the surroundings offer tranquility, peace and quiet as well as options to explore the coastline, the many attractions and resorts around this wonderful coastline . Picnic hampers are available as well as Cornish afternoon tea. An incredible breakfast is served fresh, (no food left on hot plates to serve yourself) plus an extensive cold supper menu which is difficult to choose from. Superb in every way!
