Photo: The Melbreak Hotel

This terraced cottage dates from an era when builders favoured an unconventional layout: bedrooms and bathroom downstairs, the entire first floor given over to living space. The arrangement works because it means the kitchen, dining area and sitting room face out across the valley, with windows front and back. A double bedroom and twin on the ground floor sleep four, and the shower room has a heated towel rail. Essentials like wi-fi, heating and bed linen are covered.

The kitchen has an electric oven and hob, microwave, dishwasher and coffee machine. There's a utility room outside with a freezer and washer-dryer. Two cars can park on the property, and a bike store is handy if you plan to explore the surrounding countryside. A small shared garden has a picnic bench. The cottage is non-smoking. You're within a mile of a pub, and The Conservatory Restaurant at The Melbreak Hotel is nearby if you'd rather eat out. Cockermouth and Keswick are accessible for further exploring, and the Lake District National Park is on the doorstep.

We stayed overnight at The melbreak hotel and ate in the restaurant. Check in was quick and easy and the staff membwr was very pleasant. Our room was super clean, modern and the bed was so comfortable! We had our evening meal at the hotel and it was absolutely gorgeous!! Honestly from start to finish the food was incredible and the brownie we had for desert was the BEST brownie we have ever tasted. The portion sizes were great too! We also had breakfast at the hotel and i can say it definitely lives up to the reviews, it was lovely! And the lady waitress was super friendly and even recommend a route for us to take to see the best scenery of the lakes. Honestly there's not single thing to dislike about this hotel and I can definitely say we will be returning!

Fabulous place to stay, lambs in adjacent field as your alarm call 🥰 Bedrooms are located separately to the main hotel but quite close anyway. Staff really lovely . Beautiful room, facilities and refreshments perfect.

I stayed at this hotel with my family and we were very impressed. All of staff were friendly and very helpful. My car tyre was flat and one of the staff helped us until everything was fine. Food was great. Room was clean and comfortable. You definitely wake up and see those sheep nearby your window.
