Matlock sits at the edge of the Peak District, surrounded by walking country and historic market towns. The Counting House is a Grade II listed townhouse on the town's edge, built originally as a lawyer's office. It's a one-bedroom property sleeping two, with the whole place to yourself.
Downstairs there's a living room with a smart TV and games, plus a kitchen/dining room equipped for proper cooking—electric oven, hob, microwave, dishwasher and washing machine included. A separate toilet is on this floor. Upstairs, the bedroom has a kingsize bed, and the ensuite bathroom features a roll-top bath and separate shower. Period details and contemporary comfort run through the property. A small side yard has seating; parking is nearby with drop-off at the door. Essentials like heating, electricity, bed linen, towels and wifi are covered.
The location works for exploring on foot—footpaths lead through the Dales, and stately homes like Chatsworth and Haddon Hall are within reach by car. Wirksworth, the nearest market town, hosts a weekly produce market, farmers' market, and annual events including well dressing and an arts festival. A pub is within a mile. No smoking indoors.

A fantastic cottage. The Counting House was warm, inviting and well equipped. We spent a week here for our 20th wedding anniversary and had a fantastic stay. I highly recommend the Hope and Anchor just a very short walk away. Very friendly staff and great food. In fact we ate here 4 nights out of 7. The cottage was gorgeous inside and out and has the best bathroom I have ever used. The bed was very comfortable and we had everything we needed within easy reach. I hope to go back again in the future. Thank you Alison and Peter for providing such a memorable experience for us.

We had a terrific stay at the Counting House just after New Year 2025. Can't fault it in any way - comfortable and warm with a particularly luxurious bathroom. Wirksworth is great too. Lovely Bistro and Italian plus the quirky Red Lion all within staggering distance. Dodgy weather meant we weren't sure if we'd be able to drive home on the day we were due to leave and Alison and Peter were very flexible and kind with giving us the potential choices of staying an extra night or having a late checkout.

The Counting House is a credit to Alison & Peter who were the perfect hosts. Everything was provided that you could possibly need for a luxury and comfortable stay in a homely, and beautifully designed house in a perfect location for visiting other areas as well as staying in the lovely Wirksworth centre. The whole house is a labour of love, with so much thought and quality put into it. Our favourite rooms were the relaxing romantic bathroom and also the bedroom was amazing, the mural over the bed had been exquisitely hand painted by themselves and the very comfortable bed had lovely quality white bedding. Covid, cleanliness was a priority, and welcoming provisions greeted us on arrival. We enjoyed our stay in The counting House so much, that we decided to stay longer and not move on as originally planned, which was no problem for them, and we had the pleasure of meeting Alison, a very friendly and caring lady, bringing us a replenishment of towels. We are already looking forward to our next visit in the future. An Absolutely highly recommended stay!
