About Bovey Castle

Bovey Castle is not really a castle but an Edwardian country house, built in 1907 for W H Smith's heir and later run as a railway hotel. It stands in 275 acres of estate in the Bovey valley, inside Dartmoor National Park and about a mile from the village of North Bovey. The scale of the place is what strikes you first: long panelled corridors, a great hall with an open fire, and terraced lawns running down towards the golf course and the river.

There are 59 bedrooms split between the main house and a mews building across the courtyard, plus 22 self-catering lodges on the estate. Main house rooms range from comfortable doubles to very large suites with roll-top baths and lounge areas, and many look out over the valley. The mews rooms are quieter and better value, and the lodges work well for families or groups who want their own kitchen.

Facilities cover more ground than most Devon hotels manage. There is an Elan spa with an indoor pool, sauna and treatment rooms, two restaurants, a bar and a smoking room, and an 18-hole championship course designed by J F Abercromby. The estate also runs falconry, clay shooting, archery, off-road driving and fly fishing, most of which can be booked on the day. Afternoon tea in the great hall is something of an institution.

It suits families and groups more than the average five-star hotel, partly because there is so much for children to do and partly because the grounds absorb people. Golfers and walkers get the most from it, with Haytor, Widecombe and the high moor all within a short drive. It can feel busy at weekends and during school holidays, so midweek stays are calmer.

My partner and I went for our 2 year anniversary together- was absolutely perfect! The rooms were stunning, the service was fantastic and the restaurant was delicious. We went on April the second around Easter time. It was an absolute delight! We even had the Easter bunny come visit us the morning after. With wonderful chocolate bunnies. Can only recommend! My only complaint is the spa is a little run down and could use with a bit maintenance. Other than that it’s absolutely fabulous experience. ❤️🤭✨

From the moment we arrived, everything was exceptional. Our room was beautiful, the food was outstanding and the grounds are simply stunning. More than anything though it was the people who made the stay. Every member of the team we met, from reception to the bar and restaurant was friendly, attentive and genuinely seemed to care that we had a great experience. It was the perfect place to escape for a couple of days and recharge. My wife is a foodie, loves a spa, enjoys the outdoors and appreciates a good glass of Champagne, so Bovey ticked every box! We’d return in a heartbeat and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a special getaway. Thank you to everyone at Bovey Castle for such a memorable stay.

I had a lovely stay here with my partner and family. We stayed in one of the lodges for two nights, it was very clean and comfortable. On arrival to the lodge we received a beautiful basket of goodies which were all divine. The staff were absolutely fantastic, in particular Goku was extremely kind and attentive. Our 95 year old grandma was staying with us and so often needed to be shuttled back and forth between the lodge and the main manor house. Goku always picked us up with a smile and chatted happily with us. The grounds are absolutely stunning with plenty of activities to do. It was a lovely weekend away!
