Nithsdale's rolling countryside surrounds this converted farm building near Thornhill, a location that opens onto everything from riverside walks to championship golf courses and historic estates. The cottage occupies its own corner of working farmland, with the River Nith and the broader valley landscape as your immediate backdrop.

Ground-floor living means no stairs: a king bedroom with ensuite wet room, two singles with a pull-out bed in the second room, and a separate bathroom with shower and bath. The open-plan living area has a wood-burner and doors onto the garden; the kitchen is fitted with an electric oven, hob, dishwasher and the rest of what cooking requires. Underfloor heating, wi-fi, bed linen, towels and logs all come as standard. One well-behaved dog stays free. A lawned garden with patio and BBQ, plus parking for two cars, complete the setup.

This suits families and groups of five comfortably—the property includes a travel cot and highchair if needed. Drumlanrig Castle, Ellisland (Robert Burns' home), the Charles Jencks garden and serious mountain-biking trails at the 7 Stanes are all reachable in under half an hour. Dumfries, twenty minutes away by car, has swimming, ice-skating and farm parks. No smoking indoors.

Big, spacious, warm and comfortable house. Plenty of parking space, garden to front and surrounded by fields/farmland. Very friendly and welcoming host and very pet friendly - even left out boels, throws and a towel! Lovely, quiet location, would return.

We stayed in the Dairy Cottage for a week in August with our little one. The owner Ali couldn't have been kinder, more friendly or more accommodating. The cottage was very clean, finished to a high standard, well looked after and one of the best provisioned self catering accommodations I have ever stayed in. The house manual was simple and easy to understand, covering everything we might need to use. The views were beautiful, in a lovely rural location (the sheep were great to sit and watch) but it's close enough to many attractions to get the best of both worlds! I would highly reccomend a stay at Liftingstane Cottages.
