The River Bladnoch runs past this semi-detached cottage in Newton Stewart, putting you within reach of 10 miles of private salmon and trout fishing. The surrounding countryside opens onto quiet lanes perfect for walking and cycling, while Kirroughtree and the 7stanes mountain bike trails lie close by. Golfers will find several courses in the area, and the Galloway Forest Park is accessible for exploration. The coastline to the south has rocky coves, sandy beaches and small villages to discover.

The Smithy sits entirely on the ground floor. A living room with an open fire and Freeview TV leads to a kitchen and dining space equipped for cooking proper meals. Two bedrooms—one with a double bed, one with two singles—and a bathroom with bath and shower serve the property. Everything is on one level, and the back garden is fully enclosed with seating and garden furniture for quieter days. Parking on site accommodates two cars.

Essentials including bed linen, towels, electricity and wi-fi are provided, along with fuel for the fire. A fishing license costs £140 if you want to use the private water. The property is no-smoking, and one well-behaved pet is welcome. Check-in is after 15:00 and check-out before 10:00.

Let me start by saying that Jonathan, the host, was extremely helpful and polite and that I would give him 5 stars as a host. We stayed in The Lodge which could best be described as tired. We have stayed in plenty of places that were dated in decor and this is never an issue as tastes differ. On arrival we had to wash dirty cups so we could have a tea. The lodge had obviously been cleaned at a basic, surface level: the kitchen sink, worktops, stove etc were clean, as was the bathroom suite (if you discount the festoons of cobwebs higher up). This was where the cleanliness ended. The windows were dirty (with sticky handles in the kitchen) and the insides of the frames were absolutely caked with cobwebs and dead flies (see pictures). The curtain pelmets, skirting boards and sockets were pretty thick with dust. We quickly realised we'd have to wash up the contents of the cupboards before making dinner as so many things were dirty. My wife ended up moving half the cupboard contents into an unused room just to get the dirty stuff out of our way. The owner came out to clean the windows straight away on our first night, which was nice of him. He brought an inexplicably soaking wet tea towel to replace the one caked in an unidentified white substance but did bring dry ones in the morning and he also picked up the garden's collection of dog poo, which we'd already stepped in. The bed was saggy and painfully lumpy and one of the pillows stank of stale sweat but I do believe the sheets were clean. The paintwork on the outside of the cottage was in poor repair and, again, covered in cobwebs (see pictures). This is a real shame as the location is beautiful, the host couldn't be a nicer person and the lodge itself could be absolutely stunning with a bit of TLC.

We enjoyed a great spring week here at this lovely peaceful cottage in Dumfries and Galloway. We stayed at The Lodge with two bedrooms with shower over bath, open log fire , electric slot meter and overnight storage heaters. Great countryside views close to a road but not much noise at all as a country side route . Very well positioned centrally to explore the village forests and coastal towns. We were made very welcome by Jonathan who is a friendly excellent host. The Lodge is a step back Into a cosy traditional Scottish cottage.

Visited here in December 2017. We stayed in the coach house for a long weekend. Johnathan, the owner checked in with us when we first arrived. Very friendly and let us know the basic stuff we needed to know. After this he left us to it. Place had no mobile service atall unless we walked to the road. In some ways it was annoying but overall it was a blessing. Meant everyone wasn't sitting on there phone all the time. The house itself was amazing. Two bathrooms and very spacious. I found the kitchen not the best however I have seen recently they have done it up and it looks amazing. The location was out the way in the middle of nowhere, perfect place for a retreat away from civilization. Good views & plenty of wild life to be seen. I sat watching two dears joyfully playing in a field while enjoying my morning tea! Johnathan on the last day said as there was no one else booked that week we were welcome to stay another night. Very generous offer but was back at work the next day. Would definitely revisit, only thing is it's all weekly bookings now. While the price is very reasonable it makes it alot harder to get the time off work. 🐴
