Photo: Stableyard Studio

Thornhill sits in the heart of Dumfries and Galloway, a landscape of moorland, river valleys and estates. Stableyard Studio occupies converted stone buildings within the grounds of Drumlanrig Castle, a 17th-century fortress surrounded by 90,000 acres of parkland. The location puts you minutes from formal gardens, woodland trails and the River Nith, with the Solway Coast within reach for a day out.

The studio is a single open-plan space on the first floor: living area with Freeview TV and Netflix, a kitchen with electric oven and hob, and a bedroom with a kingsize bed. The shower room has a cubicle shower. Oil central heating keeps things warm; essentials including electricity, bed linen, towels and wi-fi are covered. There's private parking for two cars and a bike store if you want to explore the estate's mountain biking trails or quieter paths on foot. One dog stays free.

The studio suits couples after countryside peace, or anyone wanting to base themselves for exploring the area. Caerlaverock Wetland Centre, sandy beaches and the dramatic Solway cliffs are within an easy drive. No smoking inside the property.

Had a wee solo getaway here and it was lovely and quiet. The studio itself was spotlessly clean, lovely big well equipped kitchen and bed/sitting room. The bed was very comfortable, the chairs not so much and they were a bit low for comfortably watching the TV, I was having to look up at it. So I ended up sitting on the bed. Great views from the windows over the grounds and into the courtyard area. Shower in the bathroom has good water pressure. The welcome pack was a nice touch with sweeties, loose tea and jam. Didn’t see much of the grounds on foot due to the awful weather, but did do a bit of exploring around the area - Moffat is worth the drive (don’t bother with the Mill shop there full of over priced tat) and Thomas Tosh for coffee in Thornhill.
