Photo: Woodburn Lodge

Woodburn suits couples after a relaxing break or families wanting a countryside base with easy access to activity. The lodge is a single-storey property sleeping four, with two bedrooms—one kingsize, one with two single beds—and a shower room. Everything is on one level, with wheelchair access available. The open-plan living space has a TV and dining area, while the kitchen is equipped for self-catering with electric oven and hob, fridge, freezer, dishwasher and washing machine. Bed linen, towels, wi-fi and electricity are all included in your stay.

The real draw for many guests is the setting. Woodburn backs directly onto Mabie Forest, one of Scotland's premier mountain biking destinations, with routes ranging from beginner-friendly to expert terrain. Serious cyclists and casual family riders alike find rides within reach; the owner can arrange guided tours by bike or on foot. Beyond the trails, Galloway Forest Park—the UK's largest—is nearby, home to waterfalls, mountains, lochs and wildlife. On clear nights, this is one of the western world's best stargazing spots. Castle Douglas, five miles away, earned its reputation as a food destination, and there's a farm shop selling local cheeses and produce just a mile distant. The coast is eleven miles south. The property has a private hot tub by arrangement, parking for two cars, and a bike store. No smoking is permitted inside.

If this place was a meal, Gordon Ramsey would rate it 10 stars because this place is stunning! Pros: little gift baskets when you get there during seasonal times (Easter, Halloween or December) great nature during the drive and it’s build on the middle of a field so there’s many sheep and cows! saw a lamb and its mother sleeping on the grass once. Great service! Nigel is super kind and actually listens unlike many popular places, I don’t know what sorcery this dude is pulling but the rooms are the comfiest! Cons: depending where you are,and who you are, the drive will be a nightmare if you get carsick and live far from it. Last time I visited (a week ago yesterday) there was so many black ants, and I suspect there’s either a colony under the hot tub or they like the warmth cuz they are always there and they’re infiltrating the house! Bees. There’s many bees obviously, as it’s near a little forest. Make sure you don’t get scared! Sincerely, Jacob -

Fabulous Lodge set in an idyllic location. Very relaxing and quiet area, well placed for a visit to Dalscone Family Fun Farm. The Lodge was scrupilously clean and well stocked. The hot tub was definitely an added bonus although we visited in extremely hot weather and a "cool tub" would've been ideal. Booked to return again soon.

My mum, my little boy & I are just back from the lodge & we had the most amazing time. The standard of this lodge is very high. Spotlessly clean, comfortable beds, walk in shower, Wi-Fi, comfy seating, dining table and lots of little decorative touches throughout. It was like a home from home. All the cooking facilities you need for a family in a peaceful setting with lots to do near by. Everything thought of which made our trip really easy & some of the best sleeps I’ve ever had. Thank you so much to the owner Nigel & his wife for a wonderful experience. Your hard work & commitment to ensuring your lodges are of the highest standard certainly shows. Can’t wait to come back in September. Top class.

Nigel was absolutely amazing. The lodge was stunning. None of the photo's do it justice. It is set in a gorgeous private plot, with gorgeous views, and brilliantly privatised areas. Fully equipped and more. The location is beautiful, lots to do and a brilliant selection to choose from. We will definitely be recommending, and booking again. Thanks Nigel.
