About Cavens Country House Hotel
Kirkbean is a small village in Dumfries and Galloway, and it's here, away from the bustle of Dumfries itself, that Cavens Country House Hotel makes its home. The house sits within its own grounds, with gardens that guests find genuinely peaceful, and the setting suits anyone after a slower pace rather than a town-centre base.
There are just seven rooms, each en-suite and noted for being generously sized, with baths large enough to make a proper soak worthwhile. Public spaces include lounges and a dining room where meals are cooked with variety and care, backed by a well-chosen wine list, and the bar is a comfortable spot to finish an evening. Breakfast is included, free WiFi covers the property, and staff are known for flexible, personal service, including adapting meal options where they can. Pets are welcome, and free on-site parking makes arriving straightforward.
Dumfries railway station lies 13.1 miles away, so a car is the practical way to reach and explore the area. Locally there's a golf course nearby along with pubs, bars and restaurants for those who fancy a change from the hotel's own dining room. It's a quiet, comfortable base for exploring Dumfries and Galloway at an easy pace.
What guests say
Unique small country hotel with large, comfortable rooms, huge bath, plenty of hot water, and excellent food and wine. The grounds are peaceful, as are the lounges and dining room. Angus tries hard to satisfy any requirements, and is flexible over meal options if something doesn’t suit. It feels more like staying in someone’s home rather than an hotel, which is rather lovely.

Take the long and winding road to the award - winning Cavens Country House and you will deem it extremely well worth it. From your first greeting by the owner and host, Angus Fordyce, the entire experience is a delightful one. Beautiful public areas with well chosen colours, paintings, comfortable and welcoming sofas and chairs and a huge sideboard with every possible choice of drinks sets the tone. Angus is a tremendous chef and his delicious meals were varied and well-judged for portion sizes. Dinner at 7, with a set meal which always lived up to expectations - and an excellent wine list to chose from as well. Our room was light, bright and spacious, we thoroughly enjoyed four nights here and found it was an excellent base to explore this beautiful and quiet corner of Scotland.
