Belhaven Bay

This is a review of the wigwams given previously on campsite paper feedback. Wigwam next to us had 2 neopolitian mastifs 50-70kg each. They were frequently off lead, or no one was holding the lead, throughout their stay. One went for my wife when she opened the door, fortunately she slammed it shut in time (dog was startled apparently). Better when we were introduced, warned one was a lockdown dog! My wife was only comfortable in the wigwam when the dogs were around - a major problem to enjoy the outdoors. We did not raise this with the camp site as we did not want to sour the atmosphere, and the dogs were very intimidating by breeding and design. Its not fair on ourselves, or the owners to keep such big dogs in a wigwam or on the lead all the time. We may have been unlucky, but the owners had a relative on site who they were visiting, so they may be back. Site should enquire about the number of dogs and their types for wigwams given the close proximity, and the limited shared space. If we had children this would have been an even bigger issue.

This well managed campsite provided everything that we needed for a break while motorhoming and cycling back from a tour of the Highlands. The photographs show something of the excellence of the modern and fully-equipped services: dish washing, laundry, toilets and showers, as well as a kitchen with a microwave and toaster! For more relaxation there is also a small library! The site has a link to the Sea Wall Cycleway and Footpath, giving easy access into Dunbar with its various shops and cafes. Or you can continue cycling south down the coast, as we did, enjoying a 25-mile return ride, almost all on a purpose-built path following NCR (National Cycle Route) 76, past the Torness Nuclear Power Station, turning back at the village of Cockburnspath. Here the Community Shop had picnic tables outside, which we soon loaded with sandwiches, cakes and coffee, all made by the community and totalling less than £10. A lucky find! Returning on the dedicated and well signed bike path to Dunbar, we explored its ancient harbour area, welcomed by a seal popping its head out of the water to greet us. With a long and checkered history, the fort above the harbour withstood all attempts at its capture. But time and tide have slowly caused its collapse, the red stone tower and its walls appearing to be vitrified and providing roosts for sea birds. The haunting atmosphere is enhanced by the thought that Mary Queen of Scots might once have been held prisoner here!

Just had three nights on the campsite in our motorhome. Fully serviced pitch was worth the extra! Pitch hardstanding, flat no levelling required. ECU stable and reliable. Shower and toilet blocks superb, one of the best we've ever had. Grounds are immaculate. Beautiful walk from camp along the coast into Dunbar, 25min walk back via road. Dunbar is a lovely old town with plenty of shops, bars and eateries. Brigg and Barrel pub 10min walk, excellent food and dog friendly.
