River View

Couples and small families will find River View a practical base for exploring the Northern Dales. This converted barn sleeps four across two bedrooms—one double and two singles—with two bathrooms, so there's no queuing in the morning. The ground floor holds the main living spaces: a kitchen/dining room for cooking together, a sitting room with TV and DVDs, and a utility room with washer and dryer if you need them. Upstairs are the bedrooms. Outside, there's a sitting area with garden furniture and a barbecue, plus private parking for two cars.

The building sits in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty overlooking the River Wear, with walking country—waterfalls, upland, valleys—on the doorstep. The historic town of Barnard Castle and Durham itself are both within easy reach; a pub is 300 yards away and a shop 400 yards. One dog is welcome. The essentials are covered: heating, electricity, linen, towels and Wi-Fi are all included. Note that there is an unfenced pond 100 yards from the property, and an external games room with a pool table is shared with the adjoining cottage. No smoking inside.
