West Bridge End - The Old Byre

County Durham

Photo: Google Maps

Weardale cuts through some of northern England's most dramatic terrain. The Durham Dales fold into an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty—moorland, river valleys, wildflower meadows and sudden waterfalls—with footpaths radiating from every village. The Old Byre sits in this landscape near Frosterley, a conversion that keeps its rural character while functioning as a full-sized family home.

Three bedrooms across two floors hold six people: two doubles, a twin, and a family bathroom plus shower room on the ground floor. The kitchen has a full range of appliances for proper cooking, a wood-burning stove warms the living areas, and everything from bed linen to Wi-Fi is included. One dog is welcome. The courtyard setting puts you near other converted farm buildings, with shared access to gardens, a summer house and a games room; parking is on site.

Barnard Castle, with its castle ruins and the Bowes Museum, is within reach. The village pub lies under a mile away. Days unfold around walks: upstream and downstream along the Wear, up onto the moors, or through the smaller valleys branching off Weardale. This is countryside without crowds.
