Mahalia

East Cambridgeshire

Mahalia is a converted goods wagon from 1917, set on the Cambridgeshire and Suffolk border. You step into a compact space laid out across one level: a living area with Freeview TV and electric fire, a bedroom with a 4ft 6in double bed, and an ensuite with shower cubicle. The vintage furnishings and period details—bone china crockery, 1950s-style kitchen—sit alongside modern essentials like wi-fi, full heating, and linen provided. There's parking for one car on site, and an enclosed orchard with garden furniture.

The kitchen, housed externally, has an electric cooker, microwave and fridge to cook from. Breakfast can happen here overlooking wildflower meadow, or outside among the garden furniture—muntjac deer regularly graze in the field beyond, and buzzards, marsh harriers and sparrow hawks are frequent visitors. Binoculars are provided. Quiet paths thread through the meadow if you want to wander; otherwise, sitting still is equally valid. A short walk up the drive reaches the village, where a supermarket with bakery, two Indian restaurants, fish and chips, a pub, two garden centres with cafes, and a country church are all within reach on foot. Wicken Fen, Newmarket, Bury St. Edmunds, Ely and Cambridge are within easy travelling distance. No smoking inside.
