East Cambridgeshire is a rural district in the east of Cambridgeshire, centred on the cathedral city of Ely. The landscape is characterised by flat fenland, with the distinctive bulk of Ely Cathedral visible across the surrounding plains. The area has long been defined by its relationship with water—the River Great Ouse runs through it, and the fens were historically drained for agriculture.
