The Ship Inn

We stayed for 5 nights would highly recommend. The room was large, airy & clean, with a comfortable bed, nice shower, tea, coffee & biscuits. The owners, James & Yolanda were really friendly & helpful. We ate there on the first night & then for the next three as it was so good - we only didn't eat there on the last night as we thought we ought to try somewhere different! - the £35 fish platter for two was excellent for quality & value, local fish cooked beautifully. We even had breakfast outside one day as the weather was so how - there's a nice seating area outside. Full Cornish - local produce from the butchers next door. It's quirky, there's not a straight wall or floor in the building & a fabulous collection of antique taxidermy in the stairwell. The pub is full of very friendly locals & the musician on Friday night was fab (he does a quiz on Sundays too!) Bang in the centre of Fowey, what more could you want :-)

We waited an hour for our lunch. The waitress repeatedly assured us that it was ‘just a couple of minutes ‘ and ‘your food is next’ - all the while we watched other tables being served. The pub was not busy. Only when asked did we get soft drinks on the house, no gesture of goodwill or appeasement was made otherwise. When it did arrive, one dish was completely forgotten and for two of us the seafood platter was overcooked and the bread was soggy. I personally have been a couple of times before, bringing friends with me and had no issues - there will not be a return visit based on what we experienced this time.

The outdoor seating is lovely, offering a nice atmosphere for a meal. However, our dinner was disappointing due to a very long wait - over an hour for our food to arrive. To make matters worse, the tables outside were dirty, left uncleaned from previous guests during our entire wait. The food and drinks themselves were good, but the self-service system (ordering inside and carrying drinks yourself) felt a bit disjointed, especially with such slow service. A shame, as the location has so much potential. Would only return if service and cleanliness improve.

We ate here during the recent heat wave and we were really impressed. We all chose the grilled salmon and the fish was perfectly cooked with a generous sized portion. We felt it was really good value for money. The staff were great under the very hot conditions too. Thank you.
