We went when it wasn't open but had a lovely time. We walked around 5k in total viewing the mines, old buildings and exploring the area. We took a pack lunch so also got to stop and admire the lovely view. Some of the signs are a bit damaged so if you'd like to find out more about the mine, you might want to take your phone and Google (yes we did get a signal ). Dogs are also allowed in the area on leads and there is a well kept public loo just before the entrance . There isn't a cafe near the site so a pack-up would be ideal though there is a shop for snacks close by. We didn't go all the way so you could certainly keep walking/exploring if you wanted.

A great couple of hours. Good for all ages. Some bending down and a few stairs to climb. Wonderful guide and and nice tea room for a drink and some cake. Lovely place and great value.

Make sure you come on an Open Day. Dates available on their website. You won't be disappointed. If you do come on a day when the museum and mine are not open then take care on the old spoil tips. If you're lucky you might find some interesting mineralization in the beck near the waterfall.

I had a brilliant time with family discovering deep underground at Nenthead Mine in Weardale. A month ago I got to go up top, this time it was amazing exploring the mine and finding out how they got lead and zinc out hundreds of years ago. For a volunteer-led activity it was very professional and to top it all off, there was cake at the end! It just so happened I had my geiger counter in my pocket. All the best things have UV Torches you can use.
