About Rhydspence
Rhydspence is a timbered old building of considerable character, set in Whitney-on-Wye in the Herefordshire countryside close to the Wye Valley. With only 7 rooms, it has the feel of a proper country inn rather than a large hotel, and open fires and beamed interiors give the place a warm, traditional atmosphere.
Each room comes with an en-suite bathroom, and guests can also expect free WiFi and drinks available in the room. The restaurant and bar are the heart of the property, serving a varied menu built around seasonal produce, with Sunday roasts and steaks singled out as particular strengths. Prices are considered fair for the standard of cooking, and the staff are consistently described as friendly and professional. Breakfast is included, and there's a garden and picnic area for warmer days, plus meeting rooms for those combining business with a stay.
Outside, the surrounding area offers fishing nearby and further options for eating out and entertainment, making it a useful base for exploring the Wye Valley. Free on-site parking is provided, which is worth knowing given the rural setting.

We had a celebration family dinner here for 14 people. The restaurant is in a beautiful old building with lovely views and a friendly, spacious atmosphere. Craig and his staff did a first rate job of providing us with excellent service and delicious, tasty food of a standard I would expect only somewhere considerably more expensive. We would certainly go there again!

We have had the most amazing experience here! Lovely food, lovely service. Couldn't recommend more highly! The seasonal produce is incredible and the menu was just brilliant. I can't speak for the rooms as we only ate at the restaurant, but I'm sure they're great too!

Restaurant only review Arriving here feels like being greeted by an old friend. The pub is a beautiful maze of historic rooms—a charming "up and down" layout that makes the most of its heritage. They have done a stellar job of cultivating a warm, inviting atmosphere within such a stunning old building. The food is fabulous and impressively priced for the quality; despite living over an hour away, the drive is always worth it. What truly elevates the experience from nice to exceptional is the service. It is slick, professional, and provides a Michelin-level experience without a hint of pretentiousness.

Yet another wonderful lunch at the Rhydspence. We always bring friends and family here when they’re visiting us in Hay and it never disappoints. Everything - the setting, the service and especially food - was top notch. A special mention for the absolutely delicious crab and elderflower starter and the weird sounding, but actually wonderful dessert with local Ragstone cheese, cherry compote and mandarin and basil ice cream - Wowser!
