About Battlesteads Hotel
Battlesteads Hotel is a long-established Northumberland inn turned country hotel, with 22 rooms set around a garden in the village of Wark on Tyne, near Hexham. It has grown well beyond a simple pub stay, adding a spa and sauna, a gym, and even an on-site observatory that makes the most of the region's dark skies, alongside more conventional comforts such as air conditioning, a lift and free WiFi.
Rooms are comfortable rather than showy, and the restaurant is a genuine draw, built around homegrown produce grown on site and served in a bar and dining room that guests describe as welcoming. Breakfast is included, and staff are consistently noted for being attentive and helpful. The hotel takes its environmental credentials seriously, reflected throughout its facilities and approach to running the place.
It's a dog-friendly property with free on-site parking, and there's a garden to relax in when the weather allows. Hexham itself lies a short drive away, while Derwent Reservoir gives visitors a reason to explore further into the surrounding countryside. For a quiet Northumberland base with its own stargazing setup, Battlesteads is hard to match.

What guests say
Having eaten a lovely meal here, approximately 4 years ago we were looking forward to an overnight stay with an evening meal. Our room was very comfortable with a lovely big comfortable bed and excellent toiletries in the bathroom. Unfortunately the evening meal was very underwhelming. The menu was quite limited, there is a taster menu available but you need to book that in advance so we couldn't have that. I had a brisket burger which was pleasant enough. Husband had a "sizzler" salad with chicken. The salad was just bog standard, lettuce, tomatoes, red onion etc , nothing different about it at all. On tasting it it was apparent that there wasn't any dressing on it and he hadn't been asked if he wanted any. As a consequence he had to go and ask for some, they managed to rustle up some oil with vinegar a short time later. His chicken looked very pale and insipid but tasted nice. In short, this is a lovely comfortable place but it was let down by a mediocre meal. Perhaps we should have planned ahead and booked the taster menu.

Firstly for a long time I've never been so impressed with a Hotel! The rooms are so warm & comfortable, well stocked with lovely toiletries & very well thought out. The bar area similarly well thought out, comfortable, excellent choice of cask beers & well stocked for all needs. Then onto the restaurant we had the 8 course taster menu on the 1st night & tried the standard menu as well. Some of the taster courses were perhaps not to my taste but great to try & feedback always asked for after each course, so how can you fault? Staff great!! Green credentials for the Hotel they are trying everything & all credit. Will definitely be back!

We saw a great deal (2 nights B&B plus 1x 8 course tasting menu for 2) and it was a superb stay and deal. Great pub/bar area with a good selection of ales and cocktails too. Food was very good too (recommend the wine pairing) and breakfast was a standard selection but good quality and portions. All staff were absolutely lovely and helpful. Great location too for walks of course. The observatory is a nice (and random) night activity. We ended up having a very cloudy evening but the guys were prepared for that and it was still worth it. Will definitely be back.

Great little gem, surrounded by a beautiful countryside and historical sites. We stayed in a spacious lodge for a family of four, lots of little thoughtful touches throughout. Food in a restaurant was delicious and all the staff were very attentive and friendly. We stayed for one night only to visit on-site located observatory centre which was a great experience. We will be coming back again to explore more of the great walking routes around. Highly recommended for families!
