About Riverdale Hall Hotel & Leisure

Hadrian's Wall and Hexham Abbey are both within easy reach of Riverdale Hall Hotel, making Bellingham a sound base for walking the wall's forts and ditches or exploring the abbey's history. The surrounding countryside also offers fishing, golf and cycling routes, while a village pub and restaurant sit nearby for evenings when you'd rather not eat in.

The hotel itself dates back to around the 1860s and retains the feel of a proper country house, with light, airy rooms including family and accessible options, all en-suite. Guests get breakfast, a restaurant serving regional dishes, and a bar, with room service and packed lunches available for days out on the wall or in the hills. There's a pool and spa/sauna on site, useful after a day's walking, plus gardens, a picnic area and outdoor seating to make the most of the grounds.

It's also set up for weddings and events, with a bridal suite and meeting rooms alongside the more everyday comforts of free WiFi, laundry service and free on-site parking. Pets are welcome, and childcare can be arranged, which makes it a practical choice for families exploring Northumberland rather than just passing through.

The warmth of welcome on arrival is a heads up on what this gem of a hotel has to offer. The food is outstanding, the rooms are spotless and very comfortable, and our view was beautiful. The pool and sauna are a bonus. Yes its decor is dated but that kind of adds to its charm. We feel privileged to be a guest in such a warm and welcoming hotel. Every staff member we have met has gone above and beyond, an absolute credit to the hotel. We most definitely will be back to this outstanding hotel .

This is a real mixed bag... The undoubted star is the kitchen - both breakfast and evening meals are excellent and good value. We were given a family room (room 1) which was obviously very spacious, it was clean and the shower was great. The location is nice with a great riverside walk right behind the hotel and a nice little village in walking distance. The Hareshaw Linn walk from the village is lovely and the main attraction at the end is well worth the effort. That's really where the positives end... The pool/sauna is not at all inviting, ditto the bar area which is completely soulless and seems to be frequented by local drinkers more than hotel guests. Its biggest downfall however is the front of house staff - the youngsters seem to have little clue what they're doing, and some of the more mature staff are pretty hapless too - it all just feels chaotic and badly managed. The reception area is also messy and uninviting. One receptionist was very friendly and helpful when we arrived, the other was very rude and scatty when we checked out... Overall it's a shame because it could be a really nice place.

A total surprise. Booked for a business stop over, rather than Newcastle. The staff were very efficient and friendly. A good sized room, with a comfortable bed - a great nights sleep was had. Dinner was excellent, and I can truly recommend the pheasant dish. My partner had cheese and onion soup as a starter and pork as a main course - both delicious and plentiful. This hotel obviously has some talented chefs. The cooked beakfasts kept us both going all of the next day as well.

We had a great break at the Riverdale. Excellent service from reception onwards. We loved the food especially kippers for breakfast. What a treat! Bellingham is well worth a visit. Lots to see and with lovely walks this hotel makes an excellent base.
