Ballagan Lodge suits families, couples or small groups after their own space in the Highlands. The two-bedroom property sleeps four across a double and a pair of singles, with a shower room and an ensuite toilet. Everything happens on the ground floor, from the open-plan living area with its view across farmland towards the hills, to the kitchen where you can cook properly, to the decked terrace where you can sit outside with a drink.

The essentials are covered: heating, electricity, bed linen, towels and wifi are all included. One well-behaved pet stays free. There is parking for two cars on site. The lodge itself is presented in good order, with comfortable furniture and a feature fire in the living space. Culloden Battlefield lies 2½ miles away; the Clava Cairns prehistoric site is also nearby. Inverness, the regional capital, offers golf courses, fishing, walking and water sports, plus shops, restaurants and family attractions including the Aquadome and trampoline park. A pub sits within a mile, and the A96 connects you to Nairn's beach and coastal restaurants.
