Curlew Croft

Photo: Curlew Croft

Curlew Croft is a detached cottage that has been thoughtfully extended and upgraded, set at the end of a quiet track in open countryside with views across Sinclair Bay. The building combines the character of a traditional farmhouse with contemporary living space, positioned on high ground where it catches the seascapes through large windows. Ground floor throughout means no stairs to navigate, and the layout flows from a spacious lounge with wood-burning stove through to a kitchen-diner and two bedrooms served by a wet room with shower and grab rail.

The main living area occupies the newer extension, designed to make the most of the outlook. You get a king-size bed in one room and two singles in the other, an electric oven and ceramic hob for cooking, a dishwasher and washing machine, and heating from oil central heating plus solar panels that generate much of the electricity from April to September. Essentials like bed linen, towels and wi-fi are included. A large garden with patio wraps around the cottage, and there's off-road parking for two cars; an electric car charging point is available on request. One dog can stay free.

Keiss harbour lies within a short walk, along with the remains of an old castle and a three-mile beach. The headland and coastline offer direct access to walking routes from the property, and the village itself has a timeless, quiet character. Smoking is not permitted inside.

Excellent location with sea view and extensive enclosed gardens but was totally spoilt by the lack of cleanliness. It was very clear on arrival that no cleaning had taken place. Carpets had not been vacuumed, all surfaces were thick with dust. The kitchen and fridge was full of food remains. The bathroom had not been cleaned, the toilet was disgusting. The bed in the double bedroom was broken and propped up by a block of wood, a very uncomfortable week, also found the double bedroom to have wet patches on the wall and black patches that have been missed. Bedding and towels didn't smell clean We had to spend time cleaning ourselves in order to be able to use the basics. Last thing anyone needs after a 6-7hr drive. Could not get hold of the caretaker so spoke to the owner who said that previous guests had complained about lack of cleaning but then insisted that they were just trying to claim some money back. Quite shocking. I had to send photos to the owner to prove what I was saying was truth because the care taker insisted all was cleaned prior and the owner backed him up profusely. As Ive previously said to the owner I'm completely disappointed.

Our favourite holiday accommodation by far, so good we have had to return for a second stay. Great views and scenery. The house is very relaxing & has everything you need. Made use of the Chromecast, (pleased of the addition of a soundbar) on the TV, and the hifi for internet radio via headphones jack on the table. Discovered Annie's bakery but that's for a separate review. Many thanks for a great stay.

We had a perfect stay at Curlew Croft with our lovely hosts. The place was beautiful, clean and you can see the work that has gone into making it. It had everything you could need and more. It’s also within walking distance of the village inn. I hugely recommend staying here.

Lovely, cozy cottage with breath-taking sea views. The wood-burning stove provides real authentic charm. The local windswept coastal countryside is beautiful and the cottage provides the perfect base from which to explore local sites and visit the nearby Orkney islands on a day trip. Wonderful stay!
