About Hillside Auckengill Campsite

With spectacular views over Caithness farmland to the North Sea, Hillside Auckengill Campsite is a peaceful spot to park up for the night when you're heading around north Scotland on the NC500. It's also a handy base if you've got an early-morning start for the Orkney Islands, being only 15 minutes' drive from Gills Bay ferry port. The handful of fully-serviced hardstanding and grass pitches here are surrounded by fields full of livestock, and campers consistently praise the spotless toilet and shower blocks alongside the welcoming hospitality from the owners.

Located in the rural village of Auckengill, 10 minutes' drive from John O'Groats and five minutes from the sea, the site makes a convenient spot for exploring Caithness in more depth. There are plenty of local walks direct from the pitches – you might like to follow sections of the fairly strenuous John O'Groats Trail (five minutes' walk) or simply amble down to Keiss Beach (an hour). Barbecues are permitted on site, or head to the pub in Keiss (five minutes' drive) for some wholesome grub.

What a fantastic wee site. Toliet and shower cubicle is immaculate. Andy gave us a warm welcome and we could park our caravan anywhere we chose. We chose fully serviced pitch facing the sea with beautiful views. We will definitely be back to this wee treasure of a site

What a lovely place it is. I would say one of the best campsites in Scotland. Super clean facilities like toilet, electric and water hookup, and benches. The Lady there was so sweet and welcoming. Overall great experience. A definite stop if you are travelling on NC500. Will come back again💚 Note: even if you can’t get to them by phone, please go there and confirm because that’s what we did and it was open. They are open all year.

What a great place this campsite is! Pulled in and met Andy, a friendly guy and offers a peaceful space for the night. We didn’t need electric hook up so it was only 15pounds! We had our choice of spot since it wasn’t too full, only a couple of motors homes already there! His campsite is clean, has a hot shower, clean bathroom, fresh water to fill your tank and a chemical toilet dump to deposit your crap. Plus it has picnic benches, a terrific view of the ocean and it’s cutely decorated. It was perfect and you can feel the care and attention that he has put into this space to make it a perfect place to spend the night while on the NC500!

Great spot for the night with all you need. Electric hook up, waste disposal, fresh water top up. Clean and stocked toilet and shower. Lovely hosts too. We stayed in March when alot of places were closed so we're so glad of it being open. On Nc500 route. Woke up to beautiful sunrise and friendly horse over the fence. Worth a couple of mins drive and go to the sea
