Smithy Burn Croft

A former croft on open moorland in Sutherland, Smithy Burn has been substantially reworked by its designer owners in 2023. They repositioned the staircase to open up the interior, added a sunroom and bathroom, and created a bar area where the old stairs stood. The result is a spacious cottage for six that still reads as a traditional Highland building but functions as a modern home. On clear days the views reach to Ben More Assynt; wildlife—red deer, red kites, ospreys—moves across the moor regularly enough that you might spot something from the breakfast table.

Downstairs holds the kitchen and dining space, a living room with woodburner and sofa-bed, and the new sunroom facing east, south and west. The kitchen is fully fitted for proper cooking. Upstairs are two bedrooms: one with a kingsize bed and walk-in shower, and one with two single beds. The second bathroom is on the ground floor. Bed linen, towels, wi-fi and heating are included; logs for the woodburner come with the booking. Outside is a lawned garden with sitting area, firepit and barbecue, plus storage for bikes and sports gear.

One dog stays free (a second can be accommodated). The garden is securely fenced, though livestock grazing nearby means dogs must be on a lead. Four cars can park on site. There is no smoking in the cottage. The setting suits anyone seeking genuine quiet and space; the nearest landmark is Capercaillie Cottage.
