Tigh An Iasgair

Highland

Tigh An Iasgair—Gaelic for The Fisherman's House—is a contemporary architect-designed dwelling built into the Highland hillside on the Applecross Peninsula. The house was conceived around sustainability, with a ground source heat pump delivering underfloor heating throughout, and its fabric is finished to a high standard, filled with natural light from large patio doors that frame views of sea, mountains and open countryside. A multi-fuel stove anchors the open-plan living area with its vaulted ceilings; stepping outside leads to a paved patio and grounds sloping toward the shoreline.

Three bedrooms and two bathrooms serve six guests, with bed linen and towels provided. The kitchen is equipped for proper cooking, and wi-fi keeps you connected if needed. A sheltered beach lies four minutes' walk away at Fearnbeg. The Applecross Peninsula itself is rough and sparsely populated—until the coastal road was built from Shieldaig, this was one of mainland Britain's least accessible parishes, still only reachable by two routes: the dramatic Bealach na Ba pass (Scotland's highest road, climbing to 2053ft) or a winding coastal drive around Loch Torridon. Walking, climbing in the Torridon Hills, kayaking and cycling all start from the door; golden eagles, buzzards, otters and wildcats inhabit the surrounding terrain. The nearest shop, pub and restaurant are seven miles away. No smoking.
