About The Old Post Office Campsite

Tucked just inside the western edge of the Lake District National Park, this compact, family-run site has been welcoming campers since 1951. Spacious pitches—many right alongside the River Irt—range from non-electric grass tent spots to fully-serviced hardstanding for motorhomes, all set against a backdrop of fells and flowing water. The river itself is a highlight: swim, paddle, or try your hand at fishing for salmon and trout, then dry off in the dedicated drying room back on site.

Facilities are spotless and well-maintained, with modern showers, wheelchair-accessible bathrooms, laundry, washing-up sinks, and free wifi. The friendly owners keep everything shipshape, and there's a motorhome service point plus storage for tourers. Santon Bridge village, just a minute's walk, has a pub and café for supplies or a post-hike pint.

Dogs are welcome year-round, and with climbing, cycling, and countless footpaths on the doorstep, this peaceful riverside spot delivers for walkers, families, and anyone chasing that classic Lake District escape.

We had a lovely stay at The old post office campsite. The staff are great and keep the site very clean and tidy. Toilets and showers are great and again always clean. The river is a lovely place for children to paddle and the site feels safe. The location is fabulous and not far from Wastwater lake and some great walks. Overall we would definitely come here again!

“We survived Storm Dave!” 🌧️💪 Stayed here during some pretty rough weather and came out smiling. The pitch was generously sized, although it did take a bit of back-and-forth manoeuvring to get out again manageable, just something to be aware of. The standout for us was the cleanliness genuinely to military standards. The entire site was immaculate and the facilities were spotless throughout our stay. Staff very helpful and accommodating came to meet us on arrival rather than the normal go to reception. There’s a nearby pub (not associated with the site) that serves decent food, but be prepared tables get booked up quickly, dog friendly! WiFi on-site is okay, but we brought our own Ryoko device which performed better. TV reception isn’t great, so streaming via WiFi (mainly in the evenings) is your best bet. The surrounding area is fantastic for walks plenty to explore right from the site. One small but important tip: bring 50p coins, as the showers run at around 10 minutes per coin. Overall, a great stay clean, well-kept, and in a brilliant location for exploring. Would definitely return.”

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I recently stayed at The Old Lost Office Campsite in Holmrook with my touring caravan and couldn’t have asked for a better experience. The campsite itself is peaceful, well-maintained, and set in a fantastic location, making it the perfect base for exploring the local area. Amazing location so close to Wasdale. What really made my stay stand out, though, was the exceptional staff. A special mention has to go to Marcus, who went above and beyond to help me during my stay. I discovered a leak in my caravan, and Marcus took the time to help me seal it, share his extensive knowledge of caravans, and offer practical advice and support. Nothing seemed too much trouble, and his willingness to help genuinely made a stressful situation much easier to deal with. It’s rare to find someone so knowledgeable, approachable, and supportive. The friendliness and helpfulness of everyone on site created a welcoming atmosphere from the moment I arrived. I would highly recommend The Old Lost Office Campsite to anyone looking for a great campsite with outstanding customer service. I’ll definitely be returning in the future.

Great campsite on bend of river. Very quiet the 2 nights we were there. Shower and toilets were very clean. Think you would struggle when full as only 2 showers. Also with the price you pay per night did not feel they needed to charge 50p for 10 mins of hot water for tye shower. Free wifi was a bonus and it was reliable. In my opinion the biggest bonus going was the location of pub which was only a 2 minute walk. Food was fantastic & guiness was good.
