Spithandle Nursery Barn - The Old Carthouse

Photo: Louis Whittal

Steyning lies in the Sussex countryside where the South Downs meet open farmland, with woodland visible across the fields and a large garden surrounding this detached barn conversion. The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust sits within reach, and the coast near Worthing is roughly 15 minutes away by car. A shop stands a mile off; pubs and restaurants cluster two miles out in the village.

The Old Carthouse is arranged on a single storey with a double bedroom and ensuite, a second bedroom with two single beds, and a separate bathroom with a roll-top bath. The main living space is open-plan, flowing from a sitting area with a woodburner to a dining zone and kitchen. Doors open onto a decked patio with garden furniture and a barbecue. Two cars can park on site, and one pet is welcome here.

Essentials like electricity, heating, bed linen and Wi-Fi come as standard; the kitchen is equipped for proper cooking. Initial fuel for the wood burner is provided. The property does not permit smoking. A cot and highchair are available on request.

We so look forward to getting our tree from Spithandle Nursery every year. It’s such a special place: beautiful trees, hot chocolate by the fire, the best homemade mince pies… and everyone is always so friendly and helpful. We’ve just collected a gorgeous Christmas tree and look forward to visiting again next year.

Lovely experience due to the lovely people running the nursery! We cut our own tree at a reasonable price and were greeted with tea hot chocolate and laughter! I hope to make this our new xmas tradition.
